Dining With a Tarkish Pasha A COLOSSAL REP. - 80: THIar ‘s- ES PRESENTED—a DINNER WHICH Last = FROM BIGHT O'CLOCK TILL MIDNIGHT. © correspondent of New wine, correspond: the London News dinner which was himself by Mutts piace. He says: © Was @ COlORBAL tven Mr. Schuyler and if, the Governor of the dinner be offered us It was asortot combi- and « Frank dinner, . do not sit in & circie op the ground, and ali eat with our ge the same’ dish, but aroand a large table. to the middie of which was a large bonquet of Mowers, and we ate with silver koives and forks. Bat it & most fall of surprise, of pitfalls dug for the feet of the ‘buscades And traps laid for and the heedless. There were some twenty-five or thirty courses, and three times did the fruit and the swests come ia, leading me to believe we were ap) ning tbe end; three mer did I attack them oaly to be surprised and overwhelmed by more roast beef, more boiled mutton, more ra gout, more chickens, more game, more par- tridges, more fish, more pllaoff, more cad: bage Qnd potatoes, that came down upoa me in crusbing and unexpected qaantities [twas more than man could bear, and [ finally gave up the contest. Tne dinner com meneéd about 5 o'clock and continue until midnight, by whieh time everybody retired from the assault, beaten and demoralized. avd there were still whole companies and battalion of dishes of roast beef, of boiled mutton, of game, or chickens, of ragouts, of all sorts of Tarkisn ‘fixin,’ fruits, and sweets, ready to down upon us in irregular disorderly masses had we ahowa the slightest sigu of resistance. This dinner had po sense of the ridicalous. It would bave gone on repeating itself over and over acain all night like a stage army.nai we al- jowed it. I must say, however, that every- ining was very good, and could we have had about ten days to eat it in, the dinner would have been @ very great success. Another fact connected with it, which added zest to our enjoyment of the entertainment, was that all the clerks whom we had observed employed about the chanceliery of the gov- ernor, Selim Effendi, and of Kian! Pacha, were now waiting at table; and I must say that the trained waiters of the Maison Dore, or the Moulin Rouge would not have doue it any better. This fact should not de takea as derogatory to the clerks in question, for so far from considering it as @ mental service they look upon it asan honor to walt upon the table of @ guest or @ superior in rank, and itis led only as & Way of testify- ing respect. Especially is this the case among the Bu , for the master or eldest son of the will wait upon youat the table, and not consider his digaity in the least imperiled by it. Oneday we were ao- companied for reveral hours by an Armeni- sn army contractor, who rode with as, and talked to us on terms of perfect equality. He was very rich, and had at that time a very large cont act for supplying beef to thearmy; but that evening, we arrived at the bouse of the Mutte-Sarif to take dinner, he a behind my chair with the servants, nd waited upon us throughont the dinner in the most careful and conscientions man- ner. And when we left he stood at the door, and yk hands with us all as we went out” A DISGUSTED Wrpow. — Capt. W. bas just returned from the Warm Springs The Captain is @ widower. At tne Springs ‘was a@ widow who rather set her for the Captain. The girls told him to x out, ano the Captain replied, well, he was ready. Sitting out in the portico one evening, the cool breeze fanning like @ ten-cent palm- leaf, and thinking of his daughters far away Al school, the widow moved up close by and opened conversation. “I hear, Captain you have grown-up daughters.” ‘es, madame, I have.” ‘How I shouid like to see their pictures.” “I will show you @ picture of my eldest daughter,” said the Captain, handing her one. “Oh, Such & Pweet face.” said the widow; “and such @ fine eye! Isa’t she called like you, Captain?” “I don’t know madame, that she “lt is @ wonder to me, Capt. W not get married. «Well, ma’am, I never think of it; for the Woman I'd have might not have me, and then, you know, vice versa.” “Yes, but what kind of lady would sult you do you?” and the widow looked her sweetest. It was right here the Ceptain’s wonderfal nerve never forsook him, but setting his eye steadily at the widow's he hardened his heart and : “Madam, she mast be ninety: five yeara old to a second, and wortn two hundred thousand dollars.” “«It is getting 80 chilly out here I must go for my shawl, id the widow; aud she loo< €¢ frigid zoues at the Captain as she brash. ed bim by with @ tossof ber head.—{ Raleigh Sentinel. Errect oF RECOIL IN RIFLE SHOOT InG.—It has been a question with marks- men whether the recoil of a pistol or rifie occurred before the ball jeft the bore. Mauy bave contended that it did not, and that the tendeney of a pistol to “throw up” did not effect lis accuracy. A recent experiment seems to baveshown conclusively that the recoil occurs before the ball leaves the bore, and does affect its direction. The experi- ment was this:—A rife barrel, twelve inches jong for convenience, was secured to @ solid nek aren S wer me 20 erevens any move ment but that of recoil directly in the rear and upward. In this situation it was fred anumber of times, and the balis followed each other into the same hole in the t. An incline or wedge was then made upon the bed at the rear of the barre! insuch & way that the breech would be raised as it slid back in the recoil. Fired under these conditions, it sent the balis lower than be- fore. This showed that tae recoil and sub- sequent elevation of the breech occurred in season to affect the direction of the ball— the eral ways upor the d eh coll affects the accuracy of the shooting.— (Springyield (Mass.)
