THE BUREAU oF ENGRAVING AND PRINT- ING.—The Appropriations Committee of the House ihis morning discussed the deticlency in the means to carry on the bureau of cu- graving and printing amounting to <216,06 It was shown that it arose on accoant of reducing the estimates forthe bureau, and imposing upon it the necessity of printing an additional impression on bank note cir- erlation. Without taking action It was first decided to hear the views of Secretary Bris- tow on the subject, who has written a letter tothe committee endorsing the necessity of &n appropriation equal to the deficit. A “BUCKEYE” WRITER ON “SMALL THINGS.”—Mrs. U. S. FREMONT'S RAILROAD FRANCHISE. The House Judiciary Committee began this morning the investigation ordered by the House, under the Hoiman resolution, into the circumstances connected with the pas- sage of the bill chartering the Memphis and Fi Passo railroad. Mr. Charles Morton ap- peared before the committee and submitted # List of persons who, it is alleged, were paid by Fremont for their services in seenring the p&ssage of the bill. Toe witness and the con mittee affect great secrecy, but it 1s well un- derstood that the list includes the names of several prominent men. some of whom are now in gress, and others the public press, and not a few well known venerable lobbyists. The evidence of Mr® Drake, a new witness, was offered in corroboration of F. H. Glover, who testified to seeing Piper jump frem the belfry window.
