The atmosphere and temperature of Indian summer while the ground is covered with snow is not favorable for pedestrianism; but, nothing daunted by mud or slush, our fash- jonables enjoyed their promenade yesterday. In the afternoon the receptions were nume- rously attended. Miss Edeshad invited her large circle of friends to assemble in her cosy pariors from 4to6 p.m., and the invitation was very generally accepted. Mrs. Shunk, nee Black, and Miss Rotch, of Philadelphia, assisted the agreeable hostess in dispensing herhospitality. Mrs. Shunk is the guest of Miss Edes. Among those who enjoyed the occasion were a majority of the ladies who are recovnized leaders in society, and many distinguished gentiemen. Conversation was in order and apparently was as greatly en- joyed as ifno opportunity had been offered therefor in @ month instead of every afier- noon and evening since the season began.
