Chandler, secretary, Will meet in this city on the 13th of January todecide upon the time and place for hold- tng the next Republican Presidential Con- vention. We learn that the National Dem - ocratic Executive Committee, of which Hon. Aug. Schell,of New York, is chair- man, Will also mect in Washington a month later, to decide when and where the Demo- cratic Convention shall be beld. As both of the last conventions were in the East—the Republican at Philadelphia, and the Demo- cratic at Baltimore—it seems to be conceded that they wil) go West next year. Among the members of the Democratic Committee there is a general disposition to name St. Louis, thovgh Chictnnati has made some claims. The Republican Convention will be held, probably, at Chicago, though but little bas been said about it. Next to the geo- graphical point, the extent of hotel accom modations and a large public hall enter principally into the question of location. As to the time, by all means let the Conven- tions be held before midsummer. The Re- publicans have uniformly held theirs in a pleasant season—the last of May or about the first week in June; but the Democrats have had their last two in sweltering July weather. ______- see-________ It is eaid that before his escape Boss Tweed was phlebotomized in a pecuniary sense by bis lawyers \to the extent of $500,000. The New York Zerald regards it as a slander upon the law as an honorable profession aud upon the administration of justice that law- yers should become accessories to the rob- bery of the treasury by exacting vast sums from 4 confessed plunderer like Tweed, and wants the grand jury to look into the mat- ter. Another New York paper, however, says that one of Tweed’s lawyers who was instrumental in getting him out of the pent. tentiary is reported to have said, ‘The ras- cal has run away without paying me.” Ap- parently he got exactly the amount he de. served. -202- The life of Piper, the alleged murderer of the little girl Mabel Young tn a Boston bel- fry, literally bangs upon a single hair. At his trial, now in progress, it was testified that inside Piper's coat, on the breast, one slender hair was found. Medical experts have been called to testify that this was a scalp hair; that it was from the head of a ebild; and that it was pulled or torn off by Violence, and had not dropped off; points, all Of which it is claimed can be established or Fefuted by a microscopical examination of the bair itself. By such slight threads of evidence may a murderer be brought to pun- ishment. It is pretty hard for a member of Congress to please everybody. Thus, Mr. Walsh, of Maryland, ts denounced by the Cumberland News for supporting for Speaker Mr. Kerr, “an out and out free-trader, backed vigor- ously by the notorious Free-Trade League of Great Britain, headquarters in New York.” The News charges that Mr. Walsh has com- menced bis career by misrepresenting his constituency, who are interested in having thelr coal protected by tariff from the Nova Scotia coal. That paper also raps the entire Maryland@delegation over the knuckles on this score for supporting Mr. Kerr. —_<e2-_____ “Western Union Reductions” is a head line that meets the reader's eye ina gcol many papers just now. Butit means a re- duction in the wages of the employes of the company, and not in its rates for transmit- ting messages. Thatis a reduction that is not likely to be made until the company is in the enjoyment of good healthy competi- lon, and ‘i, in turn, it is not likely tohave 80 long as a majority of those who shape and centro! the legislation of the country are going around with its free passes in their pockets. Speaker Kerr excused himself from mak- ing @ speech Saturday night on the score of his health. Perhaps he is working up a good able-bodied case of infectious disease so that he can notify the office seekers, as Lincoln did when he bad the small-pox, that he has got something hecan give to all of them. Mr. Henderson gets more raps than com- pliments from the press for his gratuitous assault upon the President, and the amount of sympathy he receives upon his dismissal is infinitesim: sally ae. The Baitimore Gazette in the hands of its new proprietor, Mr. William H. Welsh, is to be reorganized and the price reduced to twocents. It already has been brightened up a good deal. it elie “William M.
