This is a singular error for a jour- nal like the uestion to fall into. The nm does not, neither does it seek to, superintend the educational ef- forts of the country. Its mission is to collect €ducational statistics from all sections of the country, and foreign countries, as well, for wide dissemination among the educators Of the United States; to publish for jud!- cious circulation yearly reports embodying all the educational information of import- ance obtainable from all sources; to publish from time to time pampblets of a similar character; and finally to make the office a bureau of reference for all persons interested in the work of education. Asregaris its re- lation to the different systems of education prevailing. the bureau aets simply in an ad- visory capacity. The results of the difterent systems are plainly set before educators for their information, and frequently lead to de- sirable changes, the more imperfect systems adopting the improvements of those which have proved the most successful.
