SF Orders must in all cases be accompaniad by the money, and no paper sent longer than paid -<- w York Evening Pow Address delivered yestertay by the ( sioner of Education a lon of the New York U tional Burean of E: ing thereon styles the burean an abnormal | and unconstitut titution, which su- perintends all the educational efforts of the country. This is a singular error for a jour- nal like the uestion to fall into. The nm does not, neither does it seek to, superintend the educational ef- forts of the country. Its mission is to collect €ducational statistics from all sections of the country, and foreign countries, as well, for wide dissemination among the educators Of the United States; to publish for jud!- cious circulation yearly reports embodying all the educational information of import- ance obtainable from all sources; to publish from time to time pampblets of a similar character; and finally to make the office a bureau of reference for all persons interested in the work of education. Asregaris its re- lation to the different systems of education prevailing. the bureau aets simply in an ad- visory capacity. The results of the difterent systems are plainly set before educators for their information, and frequently lead to de- sirable changes, the more imperfect systems adopting the improvements of those which have proved the most successful. In this Way the bureau, while not superintending the work of education, does undoubtedly ex- ercise a very salutary influence in elevating its Status throughout the country. +<o2- The late Scott-Garrett unpleasantness @roused such angry feelings among the rail- road people concerned that {t seems rather a dificult matter to bring about an “era of goed feeling” since the treaty of peace was concluded. At a meeting of passenger agents in Chicago yesterday, the Michigan Central agent refused to consent to a proposed plan for raising passenger rates to the east, and Stated that his road for the present would sell tiekets on the basis of $13 to New York. The Baitimore American say The three competing lines out of Chicago are selling lckets to New York for $15, while the Balti- more and Obto Is adhering to the 818 rate fixed upon after the agreement ot peace be- tween Presidents Garrett and Scott. It is Said that if the Pen: lvai company does not advance the rate on the Fort Wayne route in acconlance with the terms of the treaty, the Baltimore and Onto will also commence cutting un Longfellow’s poem on the fiftieth anni- versary of the graduation of his class by Bowdoin College is a cretitable Pprotuction enough, and has a good many fine passages, but it reads as though he wrote it because he was request! to rather than because he was inspired to. In the matter Of verses for an occasion, Mr. Longfellow is not the equal of Whittier, by a good deal. Not that he is inferior as a poet; but he is colder, more polished and less emotional than bis Quaker brota@r, who is a man of deeper feelings and east8y stirred. In this respect Whittier is doubtless witaout a peer. —__-<e---_____ The Baltimore Swn says “there is stilla very urgent demand for harvest hands in all sections of the country, and farmers complain that they cannot begin to handle their crops properly without a much greater force than they have as yet been able to col- leet.” And yet it would doubtless be safe to assert that there are hundre:s of able-podied men in Baltimore and Washington who pre- tend to be anx-ous to secure employment, ant yet prefer tostarve in the city rather than work in the country. <o=-__ It would be a s good idea for clerks in thede- partments whenever the political tax col- lector comes around to hand him for careful perusal a copy of the President's order issued & year or two ago, forbidding assessments for Political purposes. The circular now being Sent or handed toclerks asks for one per cent. of thetr annual salaries, and is a virtual de- mand for that amount. Undoubtedly if the matter were properly brought to the atten- tion of the President he would reiterate his former order. ——+200-— ‘The Ratlroai Gazerte gives a list of the rail- road accidents im the United States during the year ending with May last, showing that the number was 1,124, and that the number of persons killed was 179, and injured 934. ‘The greatest number of accidents in any ove month was February, when they reached ~_ — 200+ — —-_ As under the former government of the city it was customary to reorganize the School board every year, the pre of trustees have thought it to be only of proper courtesy to the District gove: to tender their resignations, in © the Commissioners may reorganize for the coming year.
