Sun, Hh, The Avery Whisky Imbroglio. As yet Secretary Bristow is unaivise*, officially, of the presentment of Chief Clerk Avery by the grand jury in St. Louis for complicity with the whisky ring in their en- deavors to defraud the government. Nor has he yet had formal charges lodged with him iraplicating Col. A. H. Holt, at present chief clerk of the Internal Revenue bureav, Holt's connection with the ring, if it ever existed, is alleged to have been form™d in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, during an army re-union which he attended, and which was attended by Avery and Joyce. “Con.” McGrew, who makes the ser 8 against Avery, is now en route to tnis city to substantiate them. His friends assert there are witnesses in the city who will swear they were a when McGrew paid Avery his weekly salary, which was paid him every Saturday night. They further say that there are dispatches in the office of the Western Union Tele; we Company which he will challenge Me. very to pro- duce, and which directly connect Him with giving information 4s to the seizures which were to be made. It is said that the charges against Avery were made to Secretary Bristow a moath or more igo, and that he Tevived the evitence against him, and called into his confidence an associate Cabinet officer, both of whom have decided as to its worth, but which de- cision they refrain for the present from eom- municating. MeGrue also charges other high officials in the Treasury Department as being in the employ of the “ring,” and threatens to make pnblic their names upon his arrival here. HOW AN EDITOR Ig ALLEGED To BE IN- VOLVED Those who charge that G. W. Fishback, formerly editor and proprietor of the St. Louis Democrat, is connected with the ‘ring,’ assert that some time ago his commercial editor gave him positive imfermation that McKee and Houser, of the St. Louis Globe, were enjoying a subsidy contribated to them through “an” assessment leviel on the whisky ring for that purpose. Whea Mr. Fishback had satisfied himself as he believed that such was the case, he took measures looking to an exposure of the transaction. He put himself tn telecraphie communica- tion with Gen. Boynton. his Washington correspondent, and throuzh the means of cipher dispatches furnished sufficient pretim- inary information to induee Seeretary tow to make an investization. Subsequently ‘ashington, and returned to S about three weeks before the seiznr were mace, alleged that upon his return to St. he at once sought an interview with & Houser, lobe, and informed that the government ‘was about to ; that he had information which firms, and the very ones were paying money to the (lobe proprietors; that as an ment to pro’ houses which y wished favored he w not expose them, provides! the proprietors o the Giobe would buy the Democrat. This purchase one condition and it was this—that eaci e one signed a contract would ever: uversation: prelimi ha ven ¢ to the pure 'y talks had among tt it. This compact, alleged, was reduced to writing and signed. The next move of McKee and Houser, it is asserted, was to go into the market just before the seizures and buy enough whisky at the low rate then prevailing to cover the expense attending the purchase of the Dr crat. In this they were assisted by mem of the ring, who, however, first demanded that a copy of the'signed compact should be given toa certain firm, who was to hold it as a kind of collateral for the money that had been advanced by the whisky men. A BLUNDER. gy some strange oversight on the part of Fishback. it is alleged that the firm holding he compact had their house fseized. Of course they became indignant. It was a mistake which coul! not be rectified. A joint ‘terview with their confreres who escaped Was ont of the qrestion, for honest distillers were noting every movement of those ander -uspicion. Finally forbearance ceased to be a virtue, and the copy of the compact, with Fishback’s and other signatures, was shown to the editor of the St. Louis Journal. He RS very much surprised, and took an early casion to come to Washington. While nera he had an interview with Sceretary pad showed him the compact. This the story goes SOT IMPLICATED BEFORE THE ST.
