The latest specimen of spicy literature in the everlasting Beecher business is presented in the correspondence between Mr. Francis D. Moulton and District Attorney Britton, of Brooklyn. Mr. Moulton reminds Mr. Britton that it is nearly a year since he (Moulton) was indicted for criminal libel at the instance of Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, and requests that the trial may be proceeded with, a any withdrawal of the indictment by Beecher as an evasion of public justice. Mr. Britton replies that “the contents and cha: r of the publication re- lating to the Beecher-Tilton controversy for the past year have been such that I am in- clined to think that in case I am called upon to prosecute criminally every libel which has been published in connection with it the more important administration of the erim- inal law will of necessity stand over for the next half century. It is among the misfor- tunes of civil courts that ——— may there indulge in all manner of quarrels and ex- ploits, natural or artificial, at their will; but courts of criminal jurisdiction are moved only by the people and for the people of the state. “In this hot weather jail cases like those of Loader and Price bave the prefer- ence, as it is regarded a greater hardship for | hemes not yet proven guilty to sweat in Raymond street than to suffer from libelous publications. Later on I may be able to ac- commodate you to your satisfaction, and then you may have reason to rejoice that the ordeal had not taxed your energies and forti- tude during the heated term.” MOULTON THREATENS BEECHER WITH A SUIT FOR PERJURY. The Brookiyn Argus announces the ar- rival of Mr. Moulton from Narragan sett, for the purpose of commencing legal proceedings against Mr. Beecher. Moul- ton declares that the foulest perjary has been committed in the late trial, and that he is determined to place it where it belongs.
