The boy ph Tilton, recently sick, was the subject of inquiry, and the witness was pat upon the trail of Kate Carey. JUDICIAL ORSTETEICS. Ataquarter to twelve Mr. Evaris, in the best and shortest Saxon, asied a question relevant to a certain interesting condition of Mrs. Tilton when an important event ec cluded not to be. Here the ladies in the court grew fluttered, like sparrows at the droo ping feathers of a hawk. Two of them had hide in a corner, on the flank of the jadge, ow from the reporters. They dacked their heads to no purpose. Bessie Turner played with Other ladies looked as if they immortal hat woman of sorrows and rief, inued to recite Ute bad rath monthly nurse acquainted with vs of derivatio: ING FOR THE NURS The examination of Mrs. Mitchetl had been very laboriously condacted by Mr. Evarts, as she replied slowly, and her teeth would have come out as easy as her answers. Mr. Fullerton took up @ memorandum and proceeded to catechize her. In a minute she Slipped on dates, and had a child bora six months after a former one by Mrs. Tilton. This was too much progress, and the rather aged witness drew out her silver spectacles and examined a litte book. “I keep,” she said, explanatorily, “a list of all my sicktiesses.” iss Turner, who had taken off one of her brown kids, also consulted a memoran- dum book. AT RECESS. The quality of Mrs. Mitcheli’s testimony Was understood by a few of those who affect to follow the case slowly. By her the deft ve desires to pave the way essie Turner and Mrs. Morse, who will endeavor to make it plain that Mrs. Tilton, while very sick, at a period of childbirth or misearri: , Was assailed by her husband with the news that he had been discharged from Bowen's papers by Beecher’s influence, and was a ruined man, &c. The nurse in vain exhorted him not to annoy his wife or make her read or write, or hear reating, but still Mr. Tilton did intrade his business troubles upon a woman who had lost mach strength, and the defence expects to show that while in this condition Mrs. Tiltoa made a confession of adultery. Also, tat it was extorted from her by his machinations and brutality. Mrs. Mitehell, the nurse, remem. i enough of something that happened in Mrs. Tilton’s illness toald the succceding witnesses. On the whoie, meyers panes orer: this case, the mystery of almost total eclipse, bat in the evidence of the past few days there = pears a growing rim of light for the defead- ant. It now seems to be clear that Mr. Ti ton’s relations with Mrs. Woodhall were more confidential than he has admitted, and that they sprang as much from inclination asdespalr. The defence also proved yester- day that as soon as Tilton was discharged trom Bowen's papers, Frank Moulton came to see him. Every way the eye and mind go in this mystery it becomes a reflection of the infirm- ity of human judgment. It is, vherefore, committed to advocates who will probably commit it to posterity as oae of the muddles of our nature. The Brooklyn Trial. From the Springfleid Repub The preliminary testimony for th in the her case 18 necessary, We suppos®, as the groundwork of its geaera Though there be nothing new in it to the lic, it must be put on the record, phat it may be argued upon to the jury. The gra lual de- moralization of Tilton has to be exhibited a the foundation for the desperatioa and wick- edness that led him at last tomake this wan- ton assault on his old friend and pastor. It is for this that ancient maidens and foriora widows, venerable philanturopists, garralous eburch deacons and sinister men of the world, Sensationists aud staid traders in leath: er and politics, have moved in this pitiful procession through the Brooklyn courthouse, retailing all that the eye had seen or ear had heard, of the secrets of the Tilton household, and repeating the incoherent babblings of a bead and heart, through which every variety of theory, every possibility of purpose and desire ranged in turn. There ts nothing new or strange init all. Tilton does not appear, under the kaleidoscopic reproduction, an thing different from what he has been long known pa be. He may seem to be a very weak ard silly man ‘at times, but there ts nothing yet that suggests that he is a bad e defence man. His character and his conduct in this whole € ence are revealed by the testi- mony just about what he was supposed to be by those who knew him and the history of the case best. If all this testimony was intended by Mr. Beecher’s law; yers to elp his case directiy, erred. It is only toler- able as a@ nece: frame-work for the char- acter upon which they are to build the mon- ster who, in wanton envy and revenge, in thirst for money and notorieiy, has struck a couble blow at the virtue of his wife and the honor of the great American preacher. How- ever unfavorable the impression it may leave concerning Tilton, none of it has yet benefited Beecher. We cannot be mistaken in reporting the progress of public opinion against Beecher as uninterrupted by the testimony so far introiuced by the defease. Either he has a weak case, or his lawyers bave been purposely making a background for one of the greatest dramatic reactions ever effected in public opinion. They are running for luck with the tide against them, or they hold in reserve that which will arrest ublic fention as with # stroke, and tura back the whole course of publie judgment So far, however, they have not broken in the least the chain of circumstance and confes- sion, the great link of probabilities avd cer- tainties, that make the theory of Beecher’s guill as yet the one reasonable éxplanation of the whole tragic story.
