WASHINGTON: ee... omy 15, 1875. The new tax and tariff bill which will be disposed of in the House this week, ts meet- Ing with unexpected opposition, and itts evi- | dent it must be changed somewhat before it can pass. The owners of distilled spirits are making a vigorous protest against taxing the stock on hand an additional rate, and de- clare that owing to the supply in store and | the depression in business, they are unable to seeure money enough to pay it. It is thought by well-informed members that the bill will be so amended as to limit the tax entirely to the amount to be hereafter man- ufactured. The tobacco interest is likewise opposing the proposed increase of four eents per pound on tobacco, but it is hardly prob- abie that any change will be made in that, &s it applies only to the future manufactare. But aside from the details of the bill the more general question has been raised In the Howse and throughont th etry as to whether the government actually needs thirty-five mill of additional revenue. It is claimet th: red principally fer the sinking the Treasury r: and Means Com to the pure! of the entire deb Bsc which sho! plied as the to time Fessernle tothis law until New a clamor that h ed him to no bonds York bankers t out surplus was too br buy bonds. The latter, under the management of Gen. Eckert, lead off by re- ducing telegraphic tolls one-third, and to- day the Western Union follows suit by re ducing rates tothe same amount. Ofcourse the latter company, which has alwags put up the rates whenever it has had the monop- oly, will do so again if it succeeds in break- ing down its rival. The public, therefore, as @ matter of self-protection should encourage the competing company. <oe- ___ “THE LAGER BEER oF COMMERCE.” — There was an amusing debate in the Senate on Saturtay on the clause of the new District bill whieh defines what a wine and beer Hicense shall be. It includes “lager beer, root beer, and such ale and fermented drinks as shall not be stronger than the lager beer of aommerce.” Mr. Thurman wanted to know if a man were indicted for violating this pro- vision how the jury were to find whether the beer that wasdrunk was materially than the lager beer of commerce” Mr. Merrill answered “by experts.” Mr. Thur- man said he had heard of the expert who was called upon in St. Louis to prove whether lager beer would intoxicate, and one old German testified, “I drink sixty glasses a day and it don't intoxicate me, but I suppose if a man made a hog of himself he might get drunk upon it.” Mr. Morrill thought there ‘would be no difficulty in getting experts, but he did not satisfy Mr. Thurman, whoadmitte1 that there were plenty of experts; but he was amxious to know where to get experts of that particular beer, experts at that particular shop, experts who coul! tell whether that particular glass which was sold and had Vanished down the throat of some thirsty fellow was “stronger than the lager beer of commerce. tow find it out?” persisted the Ohio s “the beer has gone to its long home, to its destination.” Mr. Morrill jously answered that good experts could be secure besides, there was the mical h Mr. Thurman answe again that in that case there must be an ¥ of the boty! —— -se-- — The wisdom of the fathers in loeating the nation apital at a point remote from the ters of population is forcibly Hlus- irs now existing at half the trou- t is due to the Cities.
