THE BUERAND'S STORY—INPI ELIT TION AND DEFPBRATIO: WIPFR'S DENIAL. A dispatch dated Cincinnati, October 2, says The mystery of the Perkins murder and « tempted suicide grows deeper with the new de velopments of to-day. The husband of the cnhappy woman who killed her child and at tempted ber cwn life on Wednesday last, it Appears, bas fearfally wronged ber. He bes notoriously kept @ mistress, and she hss been #0 bold as to call at bis houre and ask for him. It is even stated that she demanded that he put | Away bis wife, and that she threatened to kill | them both if he did not. This prostitute, it is | seid, told Mrs. Perkins how her husband had been conducting himself. There is no den.al that Perkins had led a dissolute life, thoagh it | ts said in bis defense that as the dupe of older men, who laughed at him for bis weak. ness for women whom they brought so bis no- tice. THE HUSBAND'S STORY. It may be remembered that at the inquest Perkins refused to teli the name of the man who was in the house on the night before the murder. He bas reconsidered the matter, and toid bis friends the story of that dreadfal nigbt. It tmplicates Joseph Clare, a member of Per- kine’ Orm. residing at Bethel, twenty-five miles dirtant. The story ts thie—Per picions of intimacy between Clare wife, toanded on her desire to visit at Clare's hoass, Against her husbena’s will. Clere has been in the habit of visiting the city once in @ week, and for the Inst fow weeks bas stopped at Per 8’ house. On Tuesday night lest bi id Porkins deter: cions. He went out with © e of going down town, Clare saying be pg to the exposition.’ They parted a ins slipped back home to preceded him, and was He (Perkins) secretet i took observat bat lare ha: airs with bis wif himself down stairs, He saw Clare go ont and get a bottle of be avd take it up stairs. He heard them be trsing to get the child to sleep, #: could go te bed. He beard them talking in a iow, gar way about what they had previousiy done, and when he had fally satistied himseif of their intention, he went np snd accased thom. His wile reminded bim of his own sins. He or dered them both to leave the house at once, and angry words passed. Finally they agreed thst in the morning Mrs. Perkins and the child should go to her relatives, im norchern Olio. She was much distressed at being ordered away Clare begged that no disclosure should be made, on account of bis family. With this under- standing Perkins left bis home early in the morning. His wife had attempted suicide about 4 o'clock, but had promised to not repeat the attempt. When Perkins foand that some- thing was wrong by the failure of the hackman to get into the house, he went to Clare and told him he feared suicide. Clare begged to be al- lowed to get away, but Perkins insisted he should go to the house. He went, and soon as he eaw the body he left and has not since been seen, except ai the exposition that day, where he was seen drunk. This is the story of the hus- ban Clare if a middle-aged man, the father of grown-up family, quite wealthy, ® prominent church member and leading temperance man in his neighborhood. This story is at utter va- riance ‘with the antecedents of his life. A SRCOND ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE. Mrs. Perkins’ father arrived to-day, and had a sorrowful interview with his daughter. Some time atterward, while her father was standing in the door, she got asmail pair of sciasors from the work-basket, and stabbed her throst about the old wound, but missed, by a mere chance, the carotid artery. Her father st once took the deadly instrument from ber, but she begged to be permitted to die. She retused to eat or drink, and said she would not live. 5 very nervous in the afternoon, but to-night was better, though her symptoms sre uot favorable for recovery. In conversation with the coroner to-night, she utterly denied improper intimacy with Clare, and says her husband became enraged without caure snd wanted to drive her from his bome, aud that Clare interferred to beg that she might y till morning, This statement she makes with the full behef that she will not live. So the mystery thickens. KEErtne tt vr.—The advice of Horace Gree- ley; “Go West, young man, go West,” ts some- times good advice to follow for moral as well a Sranctal recuperation. About fifteen years ago Rev. leaac Kalloch,a Baptist clergyman of Boston, was indicted and tried for adultery, which, in Massachusetts, is a penal offence. Thongh the facts were positively sworn to, his able counsel euccecded in securing a disagree ment of,the jury. But pabilc opinion was so Srong against och that be left the ministry and went to Kansas, and engaged in busines: there. Within the last year, however, he bas become a preacher again, and is said tobe more successful than ever. Ona recent occasion in Leafenworth it is ssid thet the great church, the largcst in Kansas, was filled to overflowing, and crowds who desired admission were turned ay from the doors, The New York San re- marks: ‘This shows how short is the memory of the public for accasationsof adultery brought against am eloquent and affectionate preacher.” It is to be doubted whether it is the frailty of the public memory which produces such @ result, 50 Touch as the appetite for palpit sensation siism, which insists upo: ing itself without re- gard to consistency or consequences. PRizer ASSAULTED py Ccnaws.—A King Jamaica, dispatch, dated September 25th, “a\*:—In the Roman Catholic cathedral at the funeral of a young Cuban, a few days ago, there was a very disgraceful scene. Un entering the church the compatriots of the deceased had epread the flag of “Cuba Libre,” arked by Rev. Father Dupont to remove it th retused. He then remonstrated with the eaid the introduction of political emble: ald not be permitted in the sacred service, becsuse it was forbidden. Some twent then left the church, and beg entrance of the building. They afterwards en- tered to remove the coffin, following the priest, who, turning round, saw the flag had been re- placed. He then stopped, and declared that he would not proceed with ‘the service until the flag was removed, when one Cuban, more vio- lent than the rest, raising his hand striking the coffin, made use of an oath, and aaid the flag must remain where it was. "The rest violently assaulted the priest, driving him some four yards against the lattice work, at the same time using seme very disgusting expressions. The matter isto come belore the police magistrate es A BLoopy Arrgay in NeyAapa.—An affray took place Saturday night at Waller's Deteat, or the iower Justice hoisting works, Silver City, Nevada. ‘wo men were instantly killed, two have died since and the fifth will not live over night. There has been trouble among the trustees of the Justice Mining company. ‘I'wo parties arc fighting for the Central company. ‘One side is represented by Minear, president of the company, who appointed N. Kellogg as sa- perintendent. ‘Troubie had been anticipated the last two days. Saturday evening, about 7 o'clock, ® party of men, headed by ‘Kellogg, went to Waller's Defeat works. When near the works they were warned off. Instead of obey- ing they made a rash for the entrance, when sheoting commenced on both sides. The f lowing are the names of the killed:—W. Kel- logg, M. Kane, and Reilly. J. Brown was mortally wounded. The men killed are repre- sented as being most desperate characters. The Gffair caused great excitement in the vicinity of Gold Hill.
