SaTuRDAY NiGut, Oct. 3, 1871.5 To the Editor of the (N. ¥.) Herald T have jast learned from the Brooklyn papers (pnt not sa yet in any other way) that Mr. Jobn Vinslow, district attorney, member of the P y- mouth Church committee of investigation, aad author of their untrue and unjust report, tas used his official prerogative to procare against me a criminal indictment for Mpelling: bis client the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher. The public will recollect that in the spring of 1873 Mr. Wil- Hanf F. West, member of Plymoath charch, formulated propounded against me the charg dering Mr. Beecher, specific: in this—that I had accused him of “a criminal intimacy with Mrs. Elizabeth R. Tilton.” u Beecher had then an opportanity and invitation to convict me of libel if I was guilty; bat in- stead of accepting the challenge, he declared to his assembled congregation that he “had no charge to make against me.” Again, tlic accusation of Mr. Beecher’s adultery was re- peated in my ‘‘sworn statement” to the inves Ugating committee in July last; but it did not elicit @ prosecution for libel: Again, last summer Mr. William J. Gaynor, @ stranger equally to Mr. Beecher and myself, formaily lodged a criminal complaint against me for libelling Mr. Beecher by exposing his guiity intimacy with Mrs. Tilton; but instead of seiz ng this occasion to test the truth of my accusation Mr. Beecher and his District Attorney exerted themscives to suppress the unwelcome prose cu tion. After these successive opportanit es, carefully avoided by the pastor of Plymouth church, to prosecute me for libel, I am pow justified in asking the public to attribute the present tardy indictment against me to the fact that the Plymouth committee's report, drawn by Mr. Winelow, has failed to command pepnlar credence, and tbat Mr. Beecher and his District Attorney have found that they have bow no refuge save the desperate atiempt to place me in the position of an apparent criai- nal, and so to discredit me Inthe trial of my case by loading me in advance with the obloay of an indicted witness. In this exigency I deem it my duty, solemnly and with a full sense of Dy responsibility, to reafirm the literal and abrolute truth of my charge against the Key Henry Ward Beecher, and toreassert the litera! and absolute falsity of the special which he has vainly sought to exc himeeif. iy ipate I promptly accept the issue thu reluctantly tendered m+, and, to the end tha there may be no deley in the decision of thy controvery, 1 demand an immediate trial ‘THxovoRe TILTON. There are rumors of a suit for divorce, brought by Mrs. Tilton and others, and of @ snit of ton against J Uvington for maintaining a separation between himeelt and wi! VERDIOT OF THB CORONBE'S RURY. ‘The coroner’s verdict on the Granite-Mill dis aster was rendered Saturday afternoon. The jurors find that the fire department were a= promptly on hand as could be expected from the confusion of the alarm caused by striking four different boxes at about the same time, but tha the hooks and ladders included in the fire de- partment were insufficient in an emergency of this kind, and were poorly handled on this oc- easion. The many reports concerning other branches of the Lg yee are unfounded. It is apparent that due caution was not used in giving the alarm to persons at work in the sixth story. Had such alarm been given, and ins dicated been taken, the lives of all the persons in that story might have been saved, notwith standing there was but one escape therefrom, viz: the tower stairs. And had even the male Operatives in the sixth story not become panic- stricken at the first alarm ef fire that reached them, they might have led ail the women and cbildren in their charge down the tower stairs in safety. The evidence shows that all the ap- pliances for extinguishing fire in all the stories, such as tanks, pumps and pipes, and horizontal = and hose in various rooms, were in this mill apparently ready for morning of the fire, but water was wa: ing in them, and the hose and pipes w useless It was proved conclusively that thore were not ample means to escape from the attic. Hat there been such, the lossof life would have been avoided; and we now suggest, as an addi Uonal measure of safety and escape, that in case of fire it should be eo arranged that an siarm struck in any story should reach all othersin the mill, It clearly and indubitably “ppears that ail measures of escape by doors m every story was free and unobstrac:ed, except by smoke and fiame, there being n° Jocks or bolts on any door communicating with any room, excepting the lower door lead'ng to the tower, and that is always open during the Ume he'p is employed. And we now say that the approximate cause of death of the said Jas. Turner and twenty-two others on the morning in question, was caused by the burning of the mill, they either being destroyed by fire inside, or killed leaping to the and from the mill. ‘The jurors conclude as follows: Let the lesson rot pass unheeded, either to the mill ewners or public in general that human life em, and in all means that tend to save either par- ticularly or general the precious boon to the poorest mortals has the sanction of all mankind and an example in Him who died for all. _— in the fourth story at this time. © Wass boate did not TELEGRAMS TO THE STAR. | The Great Eartha he Pawama, Sept mber 26—A iN troduced in the assembly author! sion of th © time after that ant, and at 9.43 teady, and 5 Antigus.
