A recent lish boos: “Facta, non Verba,” contains th of the philanthropic Isbors of seven English women. It :s full of tnterest, not only for its facts, but for its inferences. Be- Levers and disbelievers in the enfranchisement of women can draw arguments from it. It will delight the former by proving—to their satis. faction, at least_that women can plan and exe- cute as well as men. It will convince the latter that the proper field for feminine energy is phil- thropy, not politics. The Atheneum says: If the volume does nothing else, it at any rate gives us ® new notion of how much there is for ‘women to do, and how much a woman can do if she is earnest about her work. em! e Bri colonies, where have all, mainly through her efforts, found em- ment. Shé has put 1,500 English women nd PI in Australia New Zealand. She has ily taken to Canada and placed in le families 1,200 children of the Lendon streets. Nine-tenths of them are girls, ‘‘who, but for their benefactress’ efforts, were condemned inevitably to alife of the lowest degradation.” Mist Macpherson has Gone the same good work for 1,800 children. Miss Chandler ,8ome years since, to found a charity for the lyzed. There was then no such thing in London. She began ee. one by opened a ospital seed ysis and epil in Queen's square, London. It is not excell by any of the same sort in the world. She has also estab- lished @ convalescent hospital, which is doing great good. She bas, moreover, secured the endowment of forty-eight permanent annuities for incurable paralytics and epileptics. She is how collecting a large amount of movey to be applied in this same way. Miss Gilbert, a blind lady. opened a blind school in a Holborn cellar, for which she paid eighteen pence a week. She has now a thous- and pupils. whom aBe taught to support them- selves. They maintain the institation that gives them @ home, an education, and an occa- pation. Its maintenance costs £3,000 @ year. This work of a poor blind woman may fairly be conipared with any of the marvels history re- cords as wrought by blind men. We admire the sightless king of Bohomia, with his blazoned motto “ich Dien,” for his dauntless ride to death on the battle-field of Crecy; but here is a blind woman who puts that motto into prac- tice, and Faves life instead of destroying it. Dirs. Hilton has built up a day nursery at Ratcliff. It is oneof the best of its kind, and bas served as @ model for many. Miss Cooper bas opened and managed a combined clab, reading room and Teéctare course for costermon- gers. Miss Whately has ized great schools tor Mahomedan children at Cairo. The author closes the account of the work these seven women have done in these words:— ‘It may be sald that there are many others who would have furnished me with good types of the philanthropic Englishwoman quite equal in the magnitude of taeir labors to those I haye men- tioned, but those whom I wish to take as my types are those who bad to fight sheir way up against difficulties, frequently themselves in restricted circumstances, and not those whose position and wealth render philanthropic efforts jess onerous. The Tent Under the Beech, It is safe to say that of the thousands who are this month summering along the besten tracks, im the mountains, at the springs, and beside the ses, but very few will return in the fall thorougiy eatistied with the eummer’s experi- ence. There seems to be a growing prejudice aguinst the tashionable centers, and all of them are discovered to have disadvantages which are rather increased than diminished by of prosperity. ‘To those of a limited purse, who are obliged toconsider the matter in its finan- cial aspects, the exorbitance of the charges is the first and greatest objection. The accomo- dations are often me; and of an inferior lity, and the repose of informality is im- possible. The result is, that the American pleasure-seeking public is eager to find some method of eluding the general expensiveness and the necessity of elaborate tollets incarred at these centere, without falling into the snares of the traditional cheap boarding-house, with its bad bread and #lip-shod society. We have recently heard of a party, consisting of cight or ten families of neighbors, who, after a careful estimate of expenses, decided to spend the summer camping oat on the shores of a beautiful lake, about six miles from the city of M ‘They took with them thirteen tents— one tor the dining-room, — second for the kitchen, anda smaiier one tor provisions, ete. Each ot the others contained one or two beds, & washstand anda bureau, though others who have tried this plan prefer a trank to the bureau. The parlor consisted of a sheltered wooden platform, rusticly furnished, and commandeda superb view of lake scenery. Hammocks were suspended under the dense foliage, and here the ladies brought their fancy work, books and periodicals. Accompanying the party were three cooks and two coachmen. A carriage and 8 light wagon were sent to the city every morn- ing, and the freshest provisions thus supplied. Milk was readily procured from a farmer's near at band, where the horses were also stabled. loose and heaithtul clothing was gener- oungstere were dressed plain- ed out to romp and gather flowers, trees, and delve in the dirt to their ‘The “nrchin” element re- recognition and encouragement, to nding improvement of both health The lake afforded the finest row- bing, the sir was pure and the scenery je. Excursions of all kinds were made in every Girection, and st the end of six weeks the party voted unanimously to re- turn to the same place in the succeeding sum- mer. One charm of this plan of living is its elasti- city. AS many servants and nurses caa be taken as occasion may require, and the detalis may be arranged to meet the circumstances and tastesof the patty.—“Jiome amd Society;”” Scritmer’s for Augu and tempe ing and Balcony Gardening. The following article on this subject is bya contributor of the London Garden .— With very little outlay or trouble, a balcony may be made @ mass of bloom during a great part of the sea- +on, and its decoration affords pleasant occupa- tion If it be covered, I would suggest, first, that a Virginia creeper be trained over the roof, as nothing with which Iam acquainted grows faster, and its color in summer is a bright green, while in antuzn it becomes a mass of glowing red. It should be planted in a tub or box, placed at the end of the balcony, along the front of which shonld be trained creepers, such ss clematis, and these should also be —— im_pots or boxes at each end of the alcony. If the latter be very long, however, some may be placed in the center as well. On the pillars or supports, honeysuckle, paseion flower and jessamine might trained with advantage, and neat baskets sua- pended between the pillars have a fine effect, filled, say,one with a fine-leaved coleus, sur- rounded with bine conrolvuluses to hang down all around it. Another might contain a white ard pink fuchsia, surrounded by biue lobelias; athird might be furnished with a handsome calceolaria in the middie, and scarlet tropro- jum to hang around it; and a fourth might con- sist of a plant of centaurea, surrounded by Rol- isen’s unique geranium. Then, standing at equal distances in pots along the front, might be placed either handsome flowering plants or sbrubs. All the plants which I have mentioned might remain outof doors all the round, except those in the baskets, some of which msy be saved in asmall greenhouse, if such a con- venience be at hi |. The cost, however, of filling them afresh every season is but trifling. In autumn I would advise their being filled with variegated ivies, many of which leok lovely drooping down round the edges and in ftheir centers should he laced hyaclnthé; tullpé, sqailfs, oF any apring Uioom- ing bulbs. In the case of balconies which hi no roof, but which merely consist of an orn: mental railing, arcbes of tron rods should be placed along the front, ee peste . covered with creepers, consisting of the varicties above named, a basket being suspended from the cen- terofeacharch. An arrangement of this kind has a very good effect. Instead of having large plants along the front, a box, made either of wood or tiles of whatever width is desirable, to tun the entire length, might be used, filled with bedding piants during the sammer months, and in antumn with buibs and pring flowering ya- rietics. When purchasing baskets 1 should a). ways advise weil-shaped but not ornamental worked patterns to be selected, as those with ornamental work on them are much more exe pensive, and when the plants are in them little of the ornamental part can be seen.
