While negotia- Yiors were pending, Tilton stated impiicitiy to Wilkinson that the only wrong Beecher ever did him was to address improper Ianguage to his wife, for which he het ample written apology. In reply to @ direct question he scouted the idea of ® graver injury, and de- clared any such reports must have originated in a morbid imagination, and denied he ever id there war anything criminal in Beecher's conduct. TILTON INTERVIEWED. A correspondent of the Tribune held an inter- view with Mr. Theodore Tilton, at dence in Brooklyn. Mr. Tilton said wife was inveigicd into appearing before the committee. Mrs. Tilton’s testimony was that no improper overtures had ever been made to her by Mr. Beecher. Her husband characterized this statement as deliberate falsehood, and yey wre oly by &@ consideration of the mo- ves which led to it» utterance. MES. Then the lady made a brief address. She insisted that both her hus- bend and Mr. Beecher were great, honorable and worthy men, who were at loggerheads through Aelnguiar misapprehension. She dwelt on the barm ASKED TWO QUES. ne to the cause of christianity by ‘the false stories circulated about Mr. Beecher, which put him, who bad forty been urging on the people the beauty and wisdom of a vir- tuous and religious lite, in the light of a hypo- crite and knave, and spoke of the sutfering- of ber husband till nearly all her hearers were in examination. * Poor be Brooklyn Argus says: “Mr. Tilton bas been severely censured by many persons for having kept silence until now. Mr. Tilton’s friends desire that this plain statement may be made public, in order that the reasons for breaking a long silence may be properly under- stood. A SINGULAR LETTER. As an important historical contribution to the story of this scandal, the following letter written by Mr. Tilton two years ago, depreca~ ting giving to the public the details that would stab many to the beart. is now given LYN, Dec. 27,1 ks for your good v, How easy to give the lie to the wicked story and thus end it forever.” But stop and consider. The story is a whole library of statements—a hundred or more—and it would be strange if some of them were not correct, though I doubt if any are. To give # general denial to such an encyclop tia of assertions would be as vague and irrelevan as to take up the Police Gazette, with it twenty-four pages of illustrations, and say, “This is all a lie.” So extensive a libel requires if anewcred at all, a special denial of its severa parts; snd, furthermore, it requires, im this particular care, not only a denial of things mis- Stated, but a truthful explanation of other thing that remain unstated and in mystery. Ip other words, the false story, if met at all, should be confronted and confounded by the true one. Now, my friend, you urge me to speak; but when the truth 1s a sword God's mercy sometimes commands it sheathed. I you think I donot burn to defend my wife and little ones you know not the fiery spirit within me. But my wife's heart is more a fountain of charity, and quencbes all resentments. She says, “ Let there bo no suifering save to ou! oolve alone,” and forbids a vind. injury of others. From the begi stood with her hand on my lips, saying,“ Huh’ Bo when you prompt me to speak for her, you countervail her more Christian mandate of silence. Moreover, after all, the chief victim of the public displeasure is myself alone; and so long as this is happily the case I shall try with ence to keep my answer within wy own east, lest it shoot forth like a th jer bolt through other hearts.
