_ EVENING STAR. CROSBY 8. NOYES.......Editor, e™ ASONIO CHOW Ler D. O,—Speoctat Lea on WED. ¥, July fnentiog reaver Largest Cireulation in the District Beading Matter on Every Page WASHINGTON OITY: TUESDAY July 21, 1874, The Star by Mati. Persons leaving the city for the summer. or any portion of it, may have Tie Star sent to their address for such time as they desire, at the rate of fifty cents per month. Orders, ac- compenied by the money, should be sent to the business office of the paper. Se Where to Advertise, ‘Tar STAR bas now a circulation very much larger than that of all the other city papers | combined, reaching every household in the District and a wide range outside. The result | is that Tus Star affords unsurpassed advan- tages as & medium of communication between all classes of the community, tn the way of the adjustment of demand and supply. -22-- ‘The republicans of Massachusetts seem to be | ina fog with reference to the governorship, the perplexing q on being as to the availi- Dility of candidates. Gen. Butler is strongly suspected of having a hankering in the direc- tion of the gubernatorial chair, but keeps his own counsel. The most likely candidate of the probibitionssts is said to be Gov. Talbot, and if he can succeed in obtaining the regular repub- Hean nomination, and there is no division, he could doubtless be elected. The Springficid Repu does not take this view of it, and says that with the growing demoralization and weakness of the Kepublicsn party, and the con- tinved popular reaction agsinst prohibition, it seems impostible that any avowed prohibition- ist should be elected this year. But either as the republican or prokibition candidate, Gov. Talbot would be an important factor in the election, and contribute either to General Butler's success, if he decides to ran, of to that of the democratic nominee. The same paper says the requisites for a suc- cessful candidate are the avoidance both of a sharp controversy with Gen. Butler and of an | W open division on the liquor question, and an individvaily strong and pepular man. All these might be found, possibly im Congressman | Peirce, of Boston, and probably in ex-Governor | Bullock snd Mr. Dawes, but in no one else. Either of the Hoars wou'd provoke such opposi- tion from Gen. Butler as to make success doubt- ful, if not impossible. It finally concludes that Mr. Dawes is just now the strongest and most | representative man of the republican party in | 4 Maseachusetts,— the man through whose leader- ship ard nomination, most easily, if not alorie, it ean be saved from defeat in the coming elec- tion. —— = «What shall we do with him?” wasthe ques- tion put to Mr. Dick by Betsy Trotwood on the arrival of David Copperfield, tired and dirty, from his long tramp through the country. The | Sapient Mr. Dick, after looking the young man Over, at once replied, “Wash him.” The por- plexed question now is, ‘What shall be done with young Pomeroy, the Massachneetts boy- murderer?” and the popular response is ‘Hang him.” The finding of the body of another of his victims has added to the intensity of public feel- ing against him, and it is safe to say that had these cr'mes been committed in the west the boy fend would long since have been lynched by the indignant citizens. It is more charitable and safer in this case, however, to belleve that | the murderous youth is insane, since there is an abzence of motive in his crimes except the mere | brutal desire of shedding human biood. As his insanity takes the form of murder mania, he ehould hereafter be placed in a position where he will be incapable of harming others. Impris. | 5: onment for life would seem to-suit this particu- | Bos lar case. ee While the voice of the pulpit generally is a4. verse to war, there are still many distinguished cburchmen who regard it as a necessary evil, among them being Archbishop Manning, of the Roman Catholic charch in England. Ina late Giscourse he said he abhorred war as he did | capital punishment, but neverthelees he be- Leved capital punishment to be expedient, necesssry and fnst; and he believed also that war, althongh it caused great suffering, was Often necessary, expedient and just. War was | capital punishment on @ large scale, inflicted | by nations upon each other. He had no sym- patby whatever with the mistaken charity of those who, in their advocacy of peace, would Feduce England to the position of an unarmed | nation, for an unarmed nation could not main- | tain its own honor, protect its interests or de- | fend its rights, and it tempted the aggression of other rations, oe ‘The Chicago Tribune gives the cost of frame buildings recently destroyed by fire at Streator and Chicago, Iiinois, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. and Jowa Fi fowa, at $350,000, and the amount of property destroyed in them at #5,030,000. Commenting on this the same pape? shys: “Placing the differeneé in the cost of these ‘wooden buildings and the brick ones at 20 per cent., the sum saved was 370,000, and to econo- wize this sum—not equal to three months’ in- eurances rates on the property destroyed—there Was wantonly and criminally sacrificed over | $5,000,000 worth of property. In 1871 the sacri- fice In this city alone was $200,000,000, when | $2,000,000 would have borght and paid for tak- ing down every wooden building dcstroyet in that fre. As the bureau is in communication with intelligent correspondents in almost every section of the union, it is claimed that these reports are very full and accurate. It ts said that Mr. Bergh, after having suc- ceeded im breaking up many abuses in the way Of the cruel treatment of the brute kind in New York, is about to give his attention to the cra- elties practiced on the turf. There are no doubt some abuses in horse racing which should be reformed.
