For libraries are low massive Egyptian book- cases and secretaries of walnut with superbly carved sphinx heads; the mantel-piece of wood as very heavily carved with figures in relief, as Diana at the chase or thickets from wh'‘ch fauns and ratyrsp eep; the frame for the mirror is a massive carving of grapes and pineapples, and fronds of the banana. Louis XVI. furniture is more fashionable for drawing-rooms, boudoirs, and sitting-roome. As in table ware, monotony is avoided and dissimiiarity preferred. Tables are in marquetrie and ebony, inlaid with creamy tinted ivory; cabinets are elaborate with faience ernamentation, rosewood is inlaid and orn: meuted with tulip wood; and low bamboo chairs are scattered bere and there, each differing frem the other in color and material of the up- bolstering. Divans for the center of large drawing-rooms are again fashionable, and otto- on castors, covered with Oriental cloth, gorgeous with bright birds and flowers done in gold thread and gay silks, are seen again. Chintz suits are made as elegant in upholstery and style as the most costly damasks and satins. Those who study economy in furnishing are warned against reps for several good reasons:— It fosters dust and moths, fades easily, and objects to constant usage. Instead of ‘reps, cashmere and satteen are recommended, and nothing in the way of carpets is more appro- priate, to correspond, than the beautifal in- ‘ins designed by Morris, inexpensive and ex- cellent of their kind. The grounds are l, buff, light cafe au lait, or wi }, COVE! with ‘aceful Greek designs, floral lelicate arabesques, and the borders are in radiant biue, scarlet, deep dahlia, red or browns, brightened by vivid scrolls of color. Another Fearfal Warniug. A PLAYFUL LAD SHOOTS HIS FOND MOTHER THROUGH TBE BREAST WITH A PISTOL SUP- POSED TO BE UNLOADED. The davgerous practice of placing loaded fSrearms within the reach of children or incom- petent persons has again resulted in loss of life. ‘Monday afternoon Mrs. Margaret W. Smith, accompanied by hereon, Sherman W. Smith, left ber residence, No. 11 Baldwin street, Charlestown district, Boston, for the purpose of visiting her brother, a Mr. Watson, an auction- @ rat 1192 Washington street. It appears that Mr. Watson had recently begun business at the above place, and within a few days had re- ceived a be od consignment of bousehold and other goods for sale, After a various articles in the store, the attent of the lady was called by ner brother toa new sewing ma- chine, which was also to be sold at public auc- tion. ‘She procured a piece of clo was busily en; in operating the machine, paying put little attention to her son, who, chiidiike, was ransacking the place. In a mone: drawer under thecounter was a loaded pistol which Mr. Watson kept for a protection against burglars, bis preinises having on more than one occasion suffered from their The lad coon found the weapon began amusing himself by attempting to discharge His mother once or twice ordered him to return the pistol to the place from whence be took it, but the boy paid no heed two her request,’ and approaching in a playful manner pointed it at her head, snapped a cap into an unloaded ebamber. The child, who is only nine yearsold, then said, ‘‘Why, it ain't loaded mother,” and — took aim, and this time exploded a loaded chamber, the bail entering the poor woman's left breast and [age ting her heart. The dying woman looked at her child, and after pronouncing the sentence, ‘1 did not think that pistol was loaded,” fell to the floor and expired. The = of the boy on realizing that his disebedionce had deprived him of bia dearest friend en earth ean betier be imagined than de- scribed. He threw himself on the body of his mother, not cold in death, and putting his arms around her neck kissed her, and in frantic tones callcd upon her to look up and speak to her “own boy,” a fond epithet which, it issaid, she usually spplied to the little fellow. The body of Mrs. Smith was removed to her late residence, where she leaves a husband and another child,a girl about 5 Peg old. The heart-rending screams of the lad attracted a large number of ho were in the vicinity at that time, to ce, and nota few wept tears of sorrow sudden death of Mrs. Smith, and the argvish of poor little Sherman, whose playful- ness cost him the life of his lovin, mother. A Great Discovary—The Night Soilofa City Made to Take the Place of Coal for Steam Boilers. A curious and perhaps important experiment has just been tried in Birmingham, England, which ts of local interest everywhere. It is the covversion of night soil and sewerage into fuel. The matter is chemically treated and Pao cigpa oe It is then mixed with a small quantity of gas-tar. and “compressed into solid blocks ot any size to suit the con- Yenience of customers.” In this state it resem- bles compressed small coal, to which a emall quantity of vegetable matter is added. We told that it is “hard compact, and on! gives forth a faint odor tar.” The ex) ments were to'show that fuel is superior to engine slack for heatin; eam boilers. These were tried on a large boiler 20 feet in length, and at the beginning the gorge, showed & pressure of steam of 8y pounds e equare inch. It is raid to give very little ash; and bere another advantage for it is claimed, tor this ash can be converted into fuel which is even better than the original. In consumption it gives off only @ small quantity of smoke. Little machinery is needed for @ conversion, and any kind of night soll can be used; while, to crown all, it cab Mapl tooarerngg and sold at almost half the rice of engine slack. A superior quality fer ousehold purposes can be made as cheap when compared with coal. Should all these objects be realized,a greatand useful discovery has been made. By oneiuveution we shall have & cheap fuel, and have solved the dificult prob- lem of how profitably to utilize our night soil. Philadelphia Press.
