The extraordinary musicai per- formances of the man-fiute, (imitating the most elaborate compositions for the finte with his mouth and hands,) and the submarine exploits of Johnson, who eats, drinks, and smokes under water, and remains below the surface for three minutes, are also of a startling character. COMMUMICATION FROM A SCHOOL Taveras. May Mth, 1874, Editor Star: Tp an article in your yesterdays Peper, on the ‘‘action of the School Board at “their last meeting, concerning the question of eb: Geographies,” you done the justice to those who were in favor of < stating that were no doa! he What I desire to say is simply this, that it is somewhat remarkable that those members of eae Geagrapaios tn eve Comaane) Dy present Geogray use "s) adopted as a Text-Book, and show so much in- terest in retaini 5 re not even attempted to defend the book for its merits as a tex-book. On the contrary their tacticts from the last was, to mt the question of the ventlemen hep goes ome to into’the merits or demerits of the book,in. which they appear to have so much interest? Where aireight that some members of the Board th no were 80 much wined and dined by a certain ck Book ut see the Agent,” could not hel; utter of the books? If they were not, why did they not show their hands, by de- fending the book for its merits, if it has any? As for the ‘bland and childlike Book-dram- mers,” permit me to say, that the writer of this had occasion to meet many of that class of indivituals, and while he has found them as 8 class as gentlemanly as any set of men he knows of, he found that there are exc2p- tions jong them, like you wou!d find among any other setof men. In proof of this, [ mean the exception, I would only state, that two ears ago, when the pro; ition was made in he boar: adopt Corneli’s Geographies in our Public Schools, an Agent for that book offered, in presence of witness, to a member of the Board 93 much of $500.—as he, the ‘Trastes, may name, if he would come out in favor of said beoks, stating at the tims, that he did not care a red, whether the book had any merits or not, but that it was a matter of business with im. How many sets of Oyclopaedias were sent here, at the time, at the sujestion of a certain member of School }, can not be exactly found -out, but that a respectable number of sets came, is known and can be proven. Neither is it known how many members were fe to travel home from im: More reasons of like tial nature can be given, “why Cornell's Geographies were put in place of a better book, two fears ago, and why such effords are made to eat it there. Ar the question of a change phies will by no means end yet, when ever it comes = again in the board, some more reasons for ‘oe interest manifested by some members of the board for retaining book in the Schools will not alone be ken abont, but proven by unmistakeable evidence.
