Largest Cirealation in the = Distiet -. April 7, 1874. Boston raises its voice against inflation, in the orthodox form at the “Hab,” by a Faneuil hall mase-meeting, with an immense array of ‘solid men” as vice presidents, inclading, of course, Mr. Charlies Francis Adams. These solid men of Boston resolved, among other things, “that those members of the Senate and House of Rep- resentatives who have voted in favor of the pending currency measures have thereby as- sailed the credit and the good nameof the United States, have cast new dishonor upon its unredeemed promises, and have inflicted a grievous wrong upon every class of the p2ople;”” that “as inflation always raises the prices of articles of consumption more rapidly than it Faises wages, any further issue of irrodeemable PSper would do special injury to every manand woman dependant upon wages or a salary;” that “the citizens of Boston coufdently appeal te the President of the ited States to refuse his spproval to af every bill which tn- Volves a viola" in his first o: upon his convi of the nao erated opin- on of apacie adherence to The trnggie be bourse as the limit « wad their em ployers for the ten h agitate o cities as well as Wast pring. month is to witaes of the c test here between the yers and joar- beymen, a8 set forth in the local columns of Tue Stak ye ty. The present indications are, that there wili be no difference of opinion on the subject, in which case it will remain with the trades societies to < ide whether the ultima. tum ought to be accepted or rejected. In the latter event, no new b Z enterprises will be undertaken this spring, and as the sam causes are at work in I lyn, a dead-lock is probable there, also. meeting of car- penters was held in New York last evening, at which resolutions were passed to combat every effort made by employegs for a return to tre ten-bour system, taking the ground that a law established by the gover: vald be re- speeted by th t any attempt to force them back to tueir former condition would be repelied by every means within the power the of societies, Lolding the employers a8 @ggresors and responsible fur auy result which follows. Chipman to detis of this District to the United States. The vet- eran New Hampshire Patriot has the following editorial remarks upon the subject “It is thought that tne difficultice in connec- tion with the improvements of the city of Washington will be settled in asatisfactory way by the passage of Mr. Chipman’s bill, entitled “An act to define the relations of the District of Columbia to the United States, and for other PErBores.” It seems that injustice has really m done to the people of the District in the taxation heretofore exacted for improvements. Fifty Fer cent. that is one-half the groperty in the city of Washington, belongs to ited States government. This includes oe sae enues which are held in fee simple by the Bited States. The latter has the right to close up every street, and do what it pleases with the city thoroughfares. Mr. ‘Chipman’ bul Proposes to recognize hereafter the obligatio United States government to pay over its sbare of the taxation for improvements in the District of Columbia. Hereafter, if this bill pastes, the public treasury will pay an equal Sum with the lecal treasury on all the oatiays tor the improvement af the city and District. It seems that in equity the United States really owes @ very large sum to the Jistric having hitherto paid its proportion of the taxes costs for mon enngpeecwan It is claimed that it would be nothing more than justice if the whole cost of the recent i were footed by the general government; that it is not fair to Private property- holders to demand of them the Maoney to make the national capital what it ought to be, and that these expenses ought to be yed by the nation itself, which has a dis- take in the capital. Its public buildings are there, the national government is there, a und it is argued that it should pay all the ox oti wired to make the national ca; | credit © people of this country in =< —- Mr. Theodore B. Samo, assistant engineer of the Washington Aqueduct, publishes a card with reference toa check which he received November 25, 1872, from Sam Strong. He | prints a copy ofa letter of the same date which be sent to Strong returning the check and say- | ing it would be highly improper for him to ac- cept compensation for doing that which it was his duty to do. Mr. F. A. Edwards certities that the letter as printed is a correct copy of the letter sent to Strong, and that the check (#50) was inclosed therein. Thus one by one the roses of the memorialists fade. -see- The Springfield Republican, of the “ inde- Pendents,” admits that it “ sees, as yet, no ey- idence that Boas Shepherd and his associates have directly cheated the District, as Tweed cheated New York, by ‘raising’ the bills, or other out and out modes of stealing.” As that paper has really some claims to independence im journalism, we shall expect it, when the in- vestigation is through, to enlarge this qualified admission into a frank and fall acknowledg- ment of the integrity of the District govern- apent. ‘The sensation cor correspondent must, by the law of his being, always be “sloshing around” as- ailing somebody or something, in job ‘They abused Washington formerly for twat sloth, and fogyism; and now they abuse it for precisely the opposite qualities. It looks like it. Of conrse Boyaton, White, Gibson, Washingdone, and all the rest will tel- graph this away ss “Crushing Testimony to-day against the Corrupt Board of Public Works.” —— Now that the storm of malicious detraction has passed by, the caim voice of dispassionate Judgment and good sense is being raised in be- half of the great work done by the District government. An editorial article quoted else- where from the Memphis Appral illustrates the view of the matter taken by thoughtfal disin- terested observers. Says the Pittsburg Gazette, the charges of corruption against Gov. Shepherd, of Washing- ton, are to be withdrawn, and extravagance is to be substitatea as the charge.
