The St. Louis Globe of the 2d instant has the following trom Wichita, Kan.: On Chistmas morning a fire broke out ina story-and-a-balf frame building on Main street, in the very heart of our city, which was ocen. pied by Misses Farly and Hanley, miliiners and dressmakers, on the first floor, and by Nutt « Winner, sign painters, in the second story, who used the rear room as a shop and the front roo: asa sleeping room, the stairway ascending on the outside of the building, and entering the rear or west The night was calm ant wn ts not ed wita | s wh | Id with a will, and so0a mes under control. H2 don’t know how long he had been asloep when he was awakened by some kiad of a noise, ant in turning over in bed received a stab in the side. He jumped out of bed and cried to Ms Nutt, sleeping by his side, “Look out, Joe!’ and started to the rear door, and while passing throngh the door in the partition between he two rooms, received a severe blow on head, which kn less, as he sup poses, as he knew no more until found, as be- fore stated, at the foot of the stairway, wit nothing on but @ torn and bloody night'sh His wounds, though severe, are not serious, and be isab.e to be ont and around the street without serious inconvenience. Winner says he aw or heard nothing at alifrom the time he ceived the first cut In the side until recovering his senses, and don't know how he got down tairs, unless only partially stunned at tirat by he blow, aud getting that far before com- pletely losing his senses. He don’t remem having received a reply trom McNatt in an to his waning, aithough he is gatisiied MeN was on the bed when he jumped out. Inquiry was made, andthe general supposition is that the body in the ruins is that of the missing msn. As soon as the tire died down the police res- cued the charred aud blackened remains, ant on examination the skull was found broken ia. A post mortem revealed a stabin the heart, which shows beyond a doubt that a foul murder has been committed. ‘The cause of the mard-r is money, as is usual in such cases, although the amount was smal! in comparison to the foulness of the bloody deed. McNutt had received trom a former partner, in Missouri, the day before, $50, which he deposited in the safe in the Southern notel of this city, where he boarded, and where it re- mained until after 6 o'clock Wednesday after- noon, when in the presence of several persons, he called tor and received the package contain- ing the money from Mr. Scott, the proprietor, He and Winner made sume jocose remarks con- cerning it, and he tore off the endof the en- velope and showed that he had money, and said he intended having a suit of clothes and some Christmas presents, and soon after went to his room, Winner accompanying him. After the fire the envelope that contained the money was found in the ore the rear ot the k, some receipts and letters, afd Winner’s coat, all scattered around and as if dropped while the person hay- ing them in possession was in a harry, or else scattered them deliberately some distance apart. Many conflicting and different stories and a thousand and one rumors are ailoat, but as yet the affair is shrouded in mystery, and it i3 a | question whether or not the secrets of the crime will ever be known, although the authorities are working hard to uarayel it, and the coro- ner’s jury are still in seaston. One important fact is, that near the articles found was picked up a life insurance policy for five thousand dollars on MeNutt’s life, and on this fact is based one theory of the affair, as fol- lows: McNutt and Winner telegraphed to To- peka fora painter to come to work for them, | and evidence is given that he left there Wed- nesday afternoon, and telegraphed to Winner to mect him at the train that night. received the dispatch, and went to the de and waited about twenty minutes before train time, and then turned around and went back to | hisroom. The painter, whose name I purposcly withhold, has not been seen or heard of since. ‘There is a theory that the painter came, and is the murdered man, while the supposed victim has lett for parts unknown, in order to get the insurance money. 7" In making cake, beat the whites ant yolks of eggs separately.
