This, thongh not so intended we presume, might be construed to indicate that the associa- tion had shown unwillingness to give publicity to tts receipts and expenditures. This would be a very unjust insinuation against the worthy citizens who compose that association. We have before us a report from the House District committee of April 19, 1372, containing a very fall statement by the officers of the association Of every item of receipt and expenditure from the commencement of the work. It also em- braces a full history of the monument under- taking, and from this it appears that the sum of $200,000 has been expended upon the work, and that in 1855 it was estimated that $522,00) would be necessary to complete the shaft ‘This sum would need to be increased by fifty per cent. in consequence of the increased cost of labor and material. The only expenses since the suspension of work in I8%5 has been $1.50 per day for a watchman at Mon- ument Place, a messenger for the s9- ciety office at $i per month, and neces- Sary fuel and stationery for the office. The sum | Of $11,005 has been invested in U.S. stocks, &:. and there is a balance of cash on hand of about | 500. The only receipts for years past have been from contributions in the boxes at the public buildings, and these average about #500 per year. —— sae After » season of unusual despondency oc- | casioned by the late financial panic, it is grati- fying to know that hopefui views of the | future are entertained in many quarters. The New York Times says: ‘The sharp experience | 9 of last year will undoubtedly make investors j more careful than heretofore about the kind of security offered them, and will probably cause | Increased vigilance with reference tc the mnn- Bes: agement of corporations that absorb a great | deal of the money of the public. In private business there bas been a great deal more weed- ing out than has appeared on the surface. The result ought to be beneticial to legitimate trade. * * * The year on which we have just en- tered promises to be distinguished bya more moderate style of living, and by a less ruinous competition among all classes of business men. Itcan hardly fail, therefore, to prove a@ year of substantial addition to the available wealth of | the couniry.”” ——-.se= - } Asthe message of Mayor Vansant, of Balti- more, shows that the funded debt of that city | has been increased during the fiscal year | ‘$1,119500, the floating debt $264,884.44, and that the aggregate funded, guaranteed and floating | debt is now swelled to $29,979,541 67, it will now be in order for the independent papers to invent “a Ring” and ‘‘a Boss” for Baltimore. To be j sure the message shows that the expenditares have been occasioned by the growth and expan- sion of the city, and for railroad subscriptions, harbor improvements, &c., but tue independent chape need not mention these incidental niat- ters. They can yell ‘Baltimore King” all the me. Judge Gary, of the supreme court of Chicago, gave a decision on Saturday, which is of interest to merchants, storekeepers and commercial | people generally. The court, in brief held that, | under arecent decision of the supreme court of the state in regard to the married woman’s act, that one cannot recover froma married woman for any amounts due. Plaintitt’s counsel raisea the point that, it such was the law a married woman could buy what she wished and could uot be compelled to pay for it. a manirest act Of injustice. Judge Gary replied that such was the case, and that any one was foolish to trust & married woman. The Railway Monitor, presumed to be good authority, es the total railroad mileage in the United States as 71,564 miles, with second track and sidings of 13,512 miles—making a total of ‘singJe track of 85,076 miles. The total capital stock is set down at $2,072,251,951, or about $23,- 956 mile; total floating and funded debt, $1,999,741,597, or $27,957 per mile; total cost of railroads and equipmenta, $3,728,416,958, or $52,000 per mile. The total gross traffic of Tail. roads for last year obtainable was $478,' 885,597 and total net receipts, over and above operating expenses, $17. ae 913. a ‘The amnual message of the mayor of Balti- more states that the gross receipts for the year ending October 51 were $7,899,918.16; the gross disbursements, $7,724,555. The funded debt of the city, S27 108,925.77, shows an increase during the same period of $1,141,500. The guaranteed debt of £1,995,000 shows a decrease on the other hand of $653,500. The floating debt is $475,415.90, being an increase of $264,531.44. The mayor renews his former recommendation that here- after the city pays as it goes and create no debt without making provision for its early rly payment. ~+222- | News from Ohio is to the effect that an effort | may be made to supplant Senator Thurman by a war Democrat, and General Ewing has been Bamed as a probable candidate in case the | movement takes shape. Itis not likely, how- ever, that the effort, if made, will amount to much, and it is probable that Mr. Thurman will be retained, as he should be without even the form of opposition in the ranks of his own | party. | A E ‘The Fail River school committee have direct- ed the teachers in the public schools of the city | to refrain from corporal punishment of any | pupil until the day following the committal of | the offence. The managers of the whipping | post in Delaware are even more considerate.
