EVENING STAR. CROSBY 8S. NOYES....... Editor. Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every |, - WASHINGTON CITY: TUESDAY......... September 16, 1873. A Fever Lair. There seems to be sufficient reason for the virulence of the yellow fever at Shreveport, La. Its location is a natural fever lair, surrounded by & vast extent of low land and bayous, always charged with poisonons malaria at low water. As isnotably the case in places naturally un- healthy, very little care is age ype ~~ any sanit: ations. town, by = rim fomemart-agenn in « condition of filth well calculated to invite a plague. Amongother sights to be met with, were the bodies offensi of putrid animals sweltering in the sun, in va- rious parts of the town, while mud-holes, reek- ing with miasma, poisoned the entire ‘mos- phere. Not long since a boat loaded with one hundred o: more Texas cattle was sunk in the river near Shreveport. The carcases of the drowned animal! wreck, taken ashore and skinned for their hides, and were then allowed to remain where they were thrown, festering in the sun and putrify- ing. If these facts be trae, it is not necessary to seek in the current removal of the great raft in the Red river above the city, the true cause for the appearance of the frightful epidemic which is now terrifying find slaying the hapless citizens. By the telegrams to-day from Shreve- port it seems there is no abatement in the fright- ful mortality there, and the distress is spoken of were picked up from the as “indescribable.” It is satisfactory to note that generous contributions for the safferersare being raised all over the country. as In accordance with the pre-concerted pro- gramme referred to in yesterday's Star, the correspondents of the New] York Sun, Tribune, and Herald, and of the Boston Adrertiser—Cin- cinnati Gazette combination sent out their fear- ful blast against the President for his action in @ppointing a successor to Governor Cooke. The oountry is informed by these truthful gentie- men, or rather by their spokesman, for all the dispatches were evidently by their phrase- ology the work of one hand, that the indignation and excitement in Washington is “intense” and “‘aniversal”’ over the appoint- ment of the new Governor, and, in short, that & popular uprising against it is threatened by the outraged people. Now, in behalf of a ca- rious public we should like to inquire where and by whom these manifestations of indignation and perturbacion have been made? From all indications here, the people of the District feel hearty gratification in the appointment of one of themselves, and a representative man of the party of movement and improvement, instead of the selection of some ontsider or political fossil having no single feeling, interest, or as- piration in common with them. The Republican, referring to these statements, eharacterizes them very justly as “deliberate salsehoods,” ton be the we raise. In Shepherd is u "and says: ersal, ing to let the people of Washing- ges and decide the issue which the first place, the Tribune di clares in its Washington column ‘that the indi, nation at the appointment of Mr. Alexander except on the part of those subservient to the'ring which rules here.’ ‘The Herald, in the same department of its issne, Says: ‘Since the appointment has been formally announced, the indignation of the people of the Distribt is very great. No one is censured but the President, and the question is asked on every side, Is it his contempt for public opinion, hia ignorance of the sentiment of the the peopie, ot is it his stol euch action’ We distin: as false, tibility to, the public. c _ indifference that nerves him to y and unequivocally deny that there is even an iota of truth in these state, ments. And whatever may be the natural sympathies of the public with the one or the other of the rival railroad interests between New York and Washington, they will all give way before the feeling of dissatisfaction created by the annoyance from the delays of the mails. The road most to blame must count upon experiencing a decided loss in the public esteem. Until the exact degree of blame can be apportioned, the public will say with wrathful ty: “A plague o’ both your houses !”” +22 ___ The Connellsville railroad, otherwise known as the Washington, Baltimore and Pittsburg railroad, appears to be in rather s bad way The company has been compelled to announce to the city its inability to meet the accruing interest on its $5,(00,000 second mort- gage bonds, which were issued with the view of funding the floating debt and completing and financially. equipping the road. It is represented that the final cost of construction and the floating debt proved to be much larger than had been anti- cipated. As the coal trade develops on the line of this road its business will doubtless increase in a way to make it a profitable enterprise. > ere piste pe ret may or THe 2Ts on League Hall {ren y election will sto o'clock tnis Tuesday) EVENING. the léth. my] Be publicans. 2 Me re ive. camp, and tro! — By bees cacse are urged to be me very important one.
