Dr. Cox, from the special committee appointed to examine into the workings of the apparatus for the odorless excavation of the il, Fe~ po at of ‘the “Odorless Excavation Company,” and found that it worked successfully. The report was ado] . Ss: Dr. Bliss then sndmitted an ordinance ‘that the present system of removing night soil, cleaning privies, vaults, sinks, and cesspools by buckets and of transporting such duld and fecal matter in carts through the streets of the cities of Washington and Georgetown, thereby agitating and exposing the same with its con- statitly emitting gases, is,and is hereby deciared to be, a nuisuance injurious to health. He made health by continuing the old system Mr. Langston seconded the motion of ref- erence. Mr. Marbury explained that in making the reference his object was not to oppose the new system proposed, but thought all important resolutions should go tothe ordinance committee before final action. Dr. Bliss thought it had come to a pretty pass that all resolutions coming before this body should be referred to one gentleman before they could be adopted. Mr. Lai rose to @ point of order. If they ‘not satis- fied as trustees, they should resign and let the Governor appoint others that would carry the work on. Mr. Hyde wished to know by what process the schools were to be carried on. Mr. Beall thought that if the teachers were willing to wait for their pay the schools could be continied. Mr. Curtis believed Mr. Beall was correct. They were appointed as trustecs to keep the schools open, not to close them. Mr. Dunlop said there should be an under- standing about Baring contracts, | This will be dove when the District settles with the guar- dians. Mr. Beall knew that light was breaking on the financial matters of the District, and loans had been negotiated in New York, Another fault was chargeable to the citizens of the District who were delinquent in paying their taxes. Mr. Dunlop thought he should find a way to sever his connection with the board. Mr. Hyvle did not play second fiddle to any person, but ne introduced the resolution to try and bring the District authorities to their senses. He did not believe the schools would be sus- pended a great while. He sup) he could re- sign, but he had been identified so long with the schools that he desired to hold on to the last. A teacher had told him that she would be unable to resume teaching as she had pay her car fare. ‘Thiswas a crying shame, and should be remedied. He desired to know what became of the taxes now coming im they could not obtain sufficient to pay tor whitewashing the school houses, Mr. Beall could remember when the board was in just such @ straight and could not pay its clerks. ‘The District government would come out from under this cloud all right. Mr. Hyde said that, having called the atten- tion of the board to the condition of affairs, he would withdraw the resolution. Mr. Dunlop submitted a resolution, which was adopted that in al! future contracts for contin- ent expenses, as well as salary expenses, notice ® given that bills will be paid when the money is obtained from the treasurer of the District, without Iimit ag to time. On motion of Mr. Beall, the secretary was an- thorized to renew the note at the Fariuers’ and Mechanics’ Bank for $5,036.61 for sixty or ninety days, and pay the interest on it. ‘The following teachers were elected for the ensuing scholastic year: Male Grammar, the election of teacher laidever; Female Grammar, Miss Laura Reed; Female Intermediate, Jennie Bates; Female’Seeondary, Miss Florence Sulli- van; Male Intermediate. The storm in the neighborhood of Bakersville was very severe, washing away bridges and fences, and damaging the crops to a very great extent. The hail stones were left in heaps after the sturm, in some places a foot thick, and literally cut the gtowing corn to pieces. PATENTS GRANTED.<A patent has been granted to Mr. R. A.
