CROSBY 5S. NOYES... Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: WEDNESDAY.........Angust 20, 1873. prompt payment of dues, which are usually light. Any one wilfully failing to meet his dues, or @amvicted of dishonesty, has all amounts pre- viously paid in by him refunded, and is obliged to leave the plantation. If any one desires to withdraw from the society, he is returned his share of the purchase money and compensated for all permanent improvements. All sick are eared for by the society. Certain officers are designated to settle all dispates by amicable ar- rangement, and they seldom fail. The societies are formed chiefly of those who work for hire, ffty cents per day being the ordinary due. Some societies have heen in operation three or four years, and paid for their land. There have been failures for a time, owing to in- competent and unfaithful officers; bat these being removed, things have worked well again. —-2ee- That excellent newspaper, | the Baltimore American, celebrates its centennial of honora- ble life to-day, and naturally gives some em- phasis to the event by publishing a supplemen- tary sheet witn a history of the city and of it- self; and also a fac simile of the first issue of the American, August 20, 1773. The news matter in this first number presents a very meager ap- pearance in contrast with the American of to-day, Among the advertisements are one signed George Washington, Mount Vernon, in which hesays that having obtained patents for up- wards of 20,000 acres of land on the Ohio and Great Kanhawa, he proposes to divide the tract into lots and lease them, allowing a reas- onable number of years rent free. He says in conclusion, “And it may not be amiss further to observe that if the scheme for establishing a new government on the Ohio,in the manner talked of, should ever be effected, these must be among the most valuable lands in it, not only on account of the goodness of the soil, and the other advantages enumerated, but from their contiguity to the seat of government, which, more than probable will be fixed at the mouth ot the Great Kanhawa.” ee Jeff. Davis isnot likely to get mach sympathy in any quarter in nis feeble effort to rekindle the embers of treason. The democratic press, already, has taken him in han?, and the New York Express says that to bim is due the fact of the humiliation and depressed condition of the South. But for him the Southern people would bave bad a much earlier peace and much bet- ter terms. When the union and confederate | conference met long before the surrender of Lee, the Government woul! have be:n content | with two resuits, the abandonment of secession and the abolition of slavery, and ieft the soath- ern states to their own local governments. Bat Jeff. Davis’ pig-headedness made any such set- tlement impossible, and the South was com- pelled to fight it out to the bitter end and ac- copt the bitter penalties. Jeff. Davis has been the bane of the South, and the Southern people Know just what value to give to his teachings. A Chicago contributor to the Iuter-Ocran writes to that paper urging the necessity that our public archives should be stored in suitable fire-proof buildings, and sensibly says The Cestruction of the titles to all the land in the country sold by the government would alone involve a loss greater than the cost of all Wash- ington city. Let us have done with this hum- buggery of capital mov.ng, kept up in order to play into the hands of a few speculators, and build such buildings as our ities require, Ko one cares whether the capital is East or West. It is all one country, and we of the West demand that our Congressmen shall see to the proper protection of such important ar- chives.” Nawsrarea Apvestisisa.—Under this head the Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Journal asks why anybody advertises in newspapers, and gives the following sound and simple answer as to why business people advertise and the principle f advertising :—“ Obviously this, that the ad- ‘wertiser wants his ‘wants’ known; that he wants’ to sell goods; that he ‘ wants’ to hire a ‘hbelp;’ that he wants either assistance or cus- tom, which, in his own private walk in life, he cannot readily come up with. Why, then, does he advertise? Because he cannot come up with his ‘want.’ Very well; where should he advertise in order to give himself the best sheet which show?
