4 ! — cnesnY S. NOYEN....... Editor, Largest Circulation in the District WASHINGTON CITY: ¥ y_ 25, 1873, The Star By Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer, or any portion of it,can have Taz Star mailed to thetr address for swch time as they desire, atthe rate of Gfty cents per month. Orders, accom- panied by the money, should be sent to the busi- nese Office of the paper. Showmen at Niagara. Under this caption the New Yor Times of ee know not ‘Tuesday last mys ee Deal dee inbidiying Upon “The report has upon what anthori the banks of the Risgare river adjacent tothe Falls been purchased ~ company of whose dosian f Si 4 5 ee _ ‘a perk. Itis rumored Y of the sakt association ieee their p: Isid ont, to enclose the same with a high nner board fencé, thereby shutting out from am view or glimpse of the Fatis all such of the out- side barbarians ax are not prepared to pay toll to the company.” ‘The Times is behind the times. All that is foreshadowed in the above paragraph h already been accomplished. The company has been organized; the park has been laid out,— that is, the turf has been turned up in places into dusty foot-paths; the high beard fence has It; the tollgate has been established; ather is now sitting in receipt of eus- toms, and there is no Ion point on the American bank of the Niagara rwhete a view of the Falis can be obtained without the payment of an entrance fee, varying in amount according to the point of view, from twenty up to fifty cents for each person, big and little. Indeed, the visitor now has to pay twenty cents for an opportanity to pay twenty-five cents for « ride down the old inclined railway te get a chance to pay fifty cents to be ferried across the myer. In other words, all the wooded ground lying between the road to Goat Island and the road to the new suspension bridge, including the point where the inclined railway stands, the ferry l@nding, and the main view of the American Fail from this side, is within the enclosure of the se-calied park. The immediate effect of this extortion may be to put a little money into the pockets of the robbers originating it, but in the end it must result in keeping visito entirely or in driving them to the hotels on the Canada side, where, owing, probably, to the proverbial slowness of the Canadian, an open view of the Fallsmay still be had without pay- ing a direct tax, as on our own side. The Ka- nucks will, however, doubtless profit by the thrifty example of their Yankee neighbors in good time, and by and by the whole concern will be snugly fenced in at roofed over. A floating newspaper paragraph states that steam towage is about to be introduced on the canals of New York on the cable principle. The motive basis of the system is the same as that of ranning a train of cars, except that the wheels of the cars run over a stationary rail, while the canal cable, corresponding to the rail, ransover the steamer’s wheel. But a train of cama! boats is dragged along on the same principle as a train of cars; and, as the cable lies at the bot- tom of the canal and is lifted over the steamer’s wheel only as it is used, it in nowise inter- teres with the navigation of -the canal by other boats. This system, it is stated, is in suc- cessful operation in several Europeancountries— in Belgium, and on the river Seine, in Franc for towing boats between Havre and Paris. If 80, It must be on short straight lines, where the water isof uniform depth. On the crooked por- Seatet suck sweet aa the: Chemipedlis ant |) 5 5 oe an BOUEE On Rum AY. Obio canal, it would take a powerful engine to move the cable without any boats attached, as the loss of power by friction around namerons short curves would be enormous. Then, again, there are points in the Chesapeake and Ohio canal—near the Great Falls for instance—where there are pools in which the water is 20 feet deep or more. The cable arrangement would not work there. An enthusiastic Buffalo paper es- timates that six boats can be taken from Bufta- lo to Troy by this system at a cost of $240, while the cost of towing the same number by mules is $735. If that can be demonstrated, and it takes no greater time for the voyage than horse or mule power, steam towing by cable will in- troduce itself wherever it is pract! ‘able; cheap transit being the problem which is engaging the attention of nearly all classes of our people. The Commercial, if we remember right, ex- pressed the epinton lately that there was some- thing wrong about the management of affairs here because more money was spent by our Board of Public Works for improvement in this District than is spent for improvement in Cincinnati. It would appear from para- graphs like the above in the Cincinnati papers, making complaints of the condition of sanitary and municipal affairs, that a little more money could be judiciously spent in that city in the way of improvement, Oincinnati, too, is a well-built, “futshed” city, supplied, it bas been supposed, with all ‘‘the modern impreve- ments,” while in Washington the whole work of making the city what it should be, has fallen upon the present District government, necessi- tating the expenditure of a large sum of money ina small space of time. Who of us recognized in Condurango, the once much vaunted remedy for cancer, an old acquaintance? Noone, and yet if a correspon- dent of the Jacksonville, Fia., Union isto be believed, that sounding title is only another name for awell known and graceful vine, the fruit of which has been used in this section asa household remedy for cuts and burns for many years. The writer says that what is called condurango in Equador, is exactly the same vine, which, in San Domingo, Porto Rico, Cuba, and in many of the South American republics, isknown by the name of condeamor, and nothing more or less than our ornamental vine called balsam-apple, “the fruit of which we all know possesses most wonderful healing virtues. ‘The application of the rind of the fruit, which nearly every native family in Florence pre- serves for medicinal purposes in whiskey or other spirits, is a gure cure for wounds, sores, burns, bruises, Sc. There is nodoudt that this plant and fruit possess many unknown virtues; the Indians make great use of it as medicine,”? —_ There speck of war atloat in Kentucky. Colonel 5. Major, the editor of the Frankfort Yeoman, is wrathful over “an editorial in the Courier-Journal, making some allusions to his political record, and has addressed a reply to the proprietors of the latter paper enquiring who is to be held to aecount in the absence of Mr. Watterson. Mr. C. E. Sears thereupon responds in the Courier-Journal that he is the responsible editer of that paper, and wrote the article to whieh Col. Major takes exception. Nothing furtber has appeared in print upon the matter, but it is possible that the preliminaries are being arranged for a meeting on the so- called field of honor. Lf sbots are exchanged and no- dedy te hart, the parties are laughed at; if one is killed the other is called a murderer. That is all for the murder ofan Indian woman in Idaho. ‘The Indian agent, in informing the Commis- sioner of Indias Affairs of the conviction a few weeks since, mentioned as a remarkable fact that it was the first instance in which a white man had been sentenced to death for the murder of an Indian. He also stated that the murder was & mov& atrocious one, and that the white man first attempted to kill the husband sassination.
