BAR- MBTT, A PROMINENT CITIZEN—A WOMAN AT TUR BOTTOM OF THE DIFFICULTY. ‘The particulars of a tragedy whieh recently oocarred in the Indian Territory, involving the loss of several lives, are given in the fol- — communication, dated the 2ist instant, to Col. H. R. Clum, acting Commissioner of Indian Affairs, by agent Roberts of the Creek agency; ‘I beg to report the particulars of an untortunate and bloody affair which bas i occurred in this nation, whereby six Indians have lost their lives. Tim. Barnett, a promi- nent and wealthy Creek citizen (whem you doubtless know, he having been in Washington on several Creek delegations,) had, it seems, two or three wives, between one of whom and an Indian by the name of Josiah Gray there had been some intimacy, which resulted ina quarrel between him and Tim. Some time afterwards Tim learned that Gray had threat- ened to kill him or was i nd to kill him, and taking with him a few friends, he (Barnett) lay in wait for Gray, and as he ‘came to work in his field shot him down and fied. A few nights afterwards, learning that Gray was not dead but only dangerously wounded, Tim took with him Tucka-cal-chee, Yo-ho-lo (Big Ben.) a Baptist preacher, and two or three others of his friends, and returned to finish him, which he did, — atthe same time Jim Gray, a brother of Josiah, and getting one of his own men killed—a brother of Big Ben. Barnett immediately went to his own house and sur- rounding himself by his friends refused to be arrested. ‘The light horse of the three districts gathered with many of the friends and connections of Josiah and Jim Gray, numbering at least one hundred, snd after counseling two or three days, on the night of the 13th of July moved over to Tim’s house, and about daylight —sr it. Some men who were outside the house fled, and one Burner Jim Boy—a son of Col. Jia Boy, who served the United States in the Flor- ide war of 187—was killed, Big Ben surren- dered without — resistance, and was im- mediately shot and killed. Col. Barnett sur- rendered upon the promise that he would not be killed, but would be allowed a fair trial. He was tied, placed upon a horse and started for the judge of the district in charge of the light horse. About three hundred yards from the house he was shot and killed, no leas than thirty shots being fired into him from behind. One of the light horse is said to have fired the firstshot. Ihave learned ot no efforts being made by the authorities to investigate the mur- der or to arrest any of the parties concerned in it.” DetaiLep.—By direction of the President, Ist Lieut. The filth accumulated during the winter was suddenly exposed to a very hot sun and bred a peculiar indigenous malaria. That the drinking water became affected, especially in the lower portions of the town. which received sew: and drainage from above; that the disease crept along the creeks and water courses, wherever drainage, mists, and malaria most prevailed, and affected princ:pally, or almost exclusively, the blacks and low class whites who lived in euch places. These localizing influ- ences were #6 great aud manifest that importa- tion was not thought of or looked for, especially as almost all the better and higher parts of Murfreesboro’ and the more cleanly and com- fortable inhabitants almost entirely escaped.” Ir the New York Sun should construe the ex- pressions of the press in favor of the late de- cision of Jud, latchford, in the libel case of Shepherd vs. Dana, into Ccenthren! its course and admiration for its editor, it will make a great mistake.
