Townsend, lawyer, of No. 254, Broadway, and said that’ they had reason to believe that their daughter, Mrs. Utica v. Brovker, who died on July 9th, had neen poisoned, and that they suspected a physician who attended her of being guilty of the alleged urder, with the knowledge and connivance of ‘olonel Blood. They said that it was the desire ef the family that the matter be fully investi- gated, and expressed their determination to bring the matter to the notice of the district torney and the grand jury, and appointed another meeting with the lewyer for yeeterday morning, when, as they said, ail their daughters would be present. They failed to appear, how- ever, at the appointed time. Mrs. Woodhull in stated that the circumstances death were suspicious, but they refuted to join in the-story of poisoning. A Mystery PremMaturgty SoLtven.—The mystery of the body found in the river at the foot of Van Brant street, South Brooklyn, some time ago, which had tied to its arms a valise full of flatirons, still remains an unexplained mystery, but the discovery has been followed by incidents not entirely destitute of humor. It seems that after the body bad lain in the Morgue awhile Mrs. Floyd, of Grand street, FE. D., identified it as that of her sen-in-law, Clas. Diehl, an insurance agent, who had been miss- ing for some time. She was allowed to take the body, and it was interred at the famtly expense. The brother of Dieh! also recognized the body, but Mrs, Dieh! was ill all the time and did not view it. She attended the funeral, however, and adopted the usual habilimentsof mouruing. Last Tuesday, it is reported, her astonishment and delight were about equally mingled when she received a letter from her missing husband. dated at Key West, Fla., informing her that he was well and about te return home. Diviptnc or A Hayaman’s Rorg.—After the body of Jim Brown, the negro murderer recently hung at Suffolk, Va., was cut down, a crowd gathered around the gallows and clam- ored for pieces of the rope with which the felon had been hung. The sheriff good-naturedly cut it up into small pieces and distributed it among the crowd, each one of which, Judyi from the eagerness displayed, regarded himsi 4s the possessor of a talisman of priceless value. It is a superstitious belief of some people that he who obtains a piece of the rope with which aman ts hanged will not have his sleep dis- turbed by unpleasant dreams. Others firmly believe that a piece of the rope carried in the pocket will protect its possessor from rheuma- tism.
