EVENI CROSBY S. NOYES....... Editor. Tete Of fifty cents per month. Orders, accom- panied by the money, shouid be sent to the busi- ‘Gous office of the paper. ‘The Threatesed Riso im Coal. ‘The fuet that the coal producers and shippers engineer the “strikes” (so-called) among the minérs for the purpose of restricting produc- tion and advancing prices, is so well understood that it ssems strange that they should think it worth while to keep up the transparent farce Propose to resort to the stale old trick, and it is given | out, accordingly, “that labor troubles have again begun in the coal regions, aud there are | indications of a general strike.” Cotempora- | neous with this is the announcement that the Reading Coal and Iron Company have stopped shipment until the 15th. In fact, the parties to | the existing “ring” of coal producers and ship- pers do not conceal their intentions. It was | given out months ago that on the principle of gradually accustoming consumers to bear the Leavier tax it is the purpose to collect, an ad- | vance of ten cents per ton monthly would be established, and the course of the market since | bas given evidence that the programme was authentic. As poluted out, however, by the N.Y. Jouraalef Com erce, & single item of the | calculation seems to have been left oat, or under-estimated. The natural increase of the demand was apparently counted on, and ac- cordingly, though it was determined that the | market should not be overstocked, we find that \¢ the large production of 1272 had been exceeded, | up to the 28th ult., by 258,632tons. Thedelayed return since that period will probably show a further increase of this excess. The market, however, bas not taken kindly to the manipu- lation of the ring, and has been slow to absorb the supply. It therefore became likely, some weeks ago, that production would have to be arbitrarily lessened, or that the scheme of making a steady monthly advance of prices would fail. The reliauce of the public must be on the failure of the ring to hold together. The very motive which binds such combinations to- getber—cupidity—is generally apt to be the mans of their early dissolution. ——____ -<ee- — Gen. Babcock has found it necessary to close up the reservatiog at the corner of Seventh street and Pennsylvania avenue, to prevent the crowds of idlers from loafing therein. reservation was opened to afford a resting place for women and children waiting for the street ears; but, as we suggested would be the case, the benches provided were monopolized by drunken loafers to sleep off the effects of Uquor. | It will now be in order to close up the reserva- | tion corner of Fifth street and Massachusetts avenue, and similar triangular spaces which, being unpoliced, are getting some rough expe- | riences trom the rowdies and mischievous boys who occupy them. There bits of turf and shrubbery are not large enuugh for park pur- poses, or to receive the attention of special policemen, and should be kept well fenced in, as beauty «pots for the eve. It may be added that there is a growing com- plaint of rowdy practices—scuiling, fighting, doud profanity, and obscene talk by gangs of | half-grown men and boys in Franklin Square and other localities intended tobe quiet and safe resorts for ladies and children. The same rowdy gangs are getting in the habit of monop- Olizing all the seats in these grounds, and it would seem to be about time for the police to give them a hint to “‘move on.”* ——_—__ ee An informal report of the late outrageous attack by rowdies upon a colored Sunday school procession in Baltimore appears in the Papers of that city, and is signed by the clerk of the board of police commissioners. It says ‘that first reports were greatly exaggerated, and mildly criticises the action of the police in lng- ging prisoners to the station-house while the attack was in progress and in firing their pistols in the air to restore order. The American charges that in this report nearly all the material fact- are suppressed, and promises to publish in full the testimony of the principal witnesses before the police board, which will put anentirely different face om the matter. ‘The reyolt of two regiments of Spanish vol- unteers in Cuba is one of the most marked in- dications of a growing spirit of disloyalty to the home government yet exhibited. The spectacle of Spain continually agitated by tu- Zults and broile, and unable to establish a Stable government, is not calculated to inspire ‘Feelings of pride and loyalty among her Ameri- ean colonists, and it vould not be at all sur- prising tf they should take advantage of her wubappy condition to cast off her yoke alto- gether and set up for themesives. ——_ ee ‘The Orangemen carried out their parade in New York undisturbed; and now having es- Rabdlished their right t>» make the demonstra- Bion, let ux hope they will in future be content Zo drop it, and that in fact all parades or @emon-tration caleulatcd to perpetuate in America the religious or clannish feuds of the ld world shall be discontinued here.
