Balloch, late of the Freedmen’s bu- reau, transferred the bulk of his property, in teust for his wife, to three trustees, of whom he isone. This fact was probably the basis for the following dispatch to the Boston Globe = “« The property of Gen. Balloch, late disburs- ing officer of the Freedmen’s bureau, ls under- stood to be transferred beyond the reach of the overnment, The Secretary of War will co. fer with the District Attorney here before de- ciding what to do under the opinion of the Attorney General.” A SPECIMEN OF THE NEW TRADE DOLLAR, Just coined in Philadelphia, wes received by Secretary Richerdson yesterday. THE SEARCH YOR THE POLARIS.—The steamer ‘Tigress sailed trom New York yesterday on her voyage of search for the Polaris. As she passed the government battery one farewell shot was fred as a parting salute. The vessel was on Sunday placed in commission by Secretary Robeson. The ceremony was brief and impres- sive. The officers of the vesse|\—Commander Greer, Lieut. Commander White, and Lients. Barry, Sebree and Wilkins—were mustered on the pee, deck, and the information was offi- cially conveyed to the Commander by the Sec- retary that he was now in command. The So ratuy also expreascd the hope that the voyage would be successful. The American ensign was then run to her peak and the navy pernant to ber mizzentop, expressing the transfer of her allegiance. Draw: Les to ogg and Various The President Informed of the Oc. ORIGIN OF THE FIRE. Was it Spontaneeus Combustion? An Investigation te be Had. Loss in the N iborhood of The Total ye Gallant Conduct of the Firemen. At about 5350clock this morping an alarm of fire was sound-d from box 63, opposite the signal office, by Samuel Gerre.:, sergeant of the watch at the War department, fite having been diseovercd a few m‘nutes previous in the south wang of the Navy depertment. Engine No. 1 promptly responded, and was followed by Nos. 5 and 2, and the hookand ladder company. As- sistant Engineer Col. Wm. 0. Drew, was early on the ground, and cavsed a general alarm to be sounded, which was almost immcdiately answered by the remainder of the fire depart- ment. The flames at this t'me were not visible from the outside of the building, but smoke was issuing from the roof, which was at once eee upon the steamers on the ground. A hose was also carried into room 15, (Bureau of Ord- nance,) in thesout! of the building, where the fire had gained most headw-y. and where itis supposed to have originat-d. “£'h's 100m is on the third floor, and ironts on 17th street. Soon after the fire broke out a number of the employes of the “epartment arrived ard did al) they could to stay the progr:-sof the flam-s, Among the first were Commodore Ro¢ers, Mr. Jot nH. Brooks, and Mr, Holmes E. Ofttey, chief clerk of the department. SAVING THE RECORDS. ‘When Mr. Broo?s arrived he found that the fire had extended t>the two rooms on the fourth floor where the log-books were stored, and knowing them to be among the most important of the archives 0. the department, he informed Commodore Rodgers, who directed a hose to be carricd t) the.e rooms and every effort made to save their contents. Preceded by Mr. Broo! Foreman Joseph Parrish, of engine No. 1, companied by several uf his men, at once went to the fourth fico:, but on filning the top of the stairs they found the hall filled with smoke and the flames darting from the roomsin which the log-books were kept. Nothing daunted, however, they crawled on their stomachs along the floor, dragging the hose with them, until they reacb~4 So om adjoining the main hall, which they found ablaze in every portion: Keeping their faces to the floor, they directed a stream of water upon the records, and soon had the satisfaction of seeing the fire entirely ex- tinguished in that portion of the building. They next directed thei attention to the other Toom, also contuining log-books, and soon had the flames under control. It’is but just fo mention that these gen*’emen deserve especial commendation for ther heroic efforts to save the important records in question. All of them were more or less burned, but, in view of the fact that the very floor on which they crawlcd was on fire—some poriions of it being burnod eniirely through—they were indeed fortunate to escape with their lives. THE FIREMEN ON THE ROOF. Meanwhile the roof of the south wing had beenscaled by the firemen, who worked with a will, and who had made operings in the root through which streams of water were turned in every direction. The fire was mainly in the th'rd and fourth stories of the south wing, and through the exertions of the tire department did not extend to the lower floor or to the mlain building: Having obtained contro! of the flames they were soon extinguished, but not until they had swept through that poition of the third and fourth floors lying in southern end of the south wing, destroying in the'r course many valuable rccords of the department, most of which, fortunately, can be replaced, but not without the outlay of much time and money. DAMAGE BY WATER. Mr. Offiey, chief clerk of the department, who was sent for on the discovery of the fire, arrived about six o’clock, and at once gave such directions as were calculat-d to secure much valuable property of the department from de- struction. By his order the books, papers, and furniture of the Secretary's office were at once removcd to the lower floor, as a perfect age of water was pouring torouga the ceiling com the floor above. Most of other rooms on the same floor, lying near the .out) win; alco cleared to prevent‘damage to tl tents by water, THE LOSSES. ‘She bureau ot steam engineering, situated on the fourth floor, sustained the greatest loss, those of the records not actually destroyed by fire being badly by water. The bu- eed bf enti oe ee cor, wis also pretty thorou, mined out, many valuable papers bang Pas by fire and water. The bureau of favigation and the bureau of yards were ir on and docks also material losses, globes nd plates for the new American Fi: ook, in the lued at $5,010, being totally destro: former, and he latter sustaining man from water. The printing room, adjoining the bureau of steam engineering, with its ma- terial, was Lge femmes ee A it many drawings of yessels were destro: or badly damaged, but fortunately these are duplicates of these stil in possession of the Navy depart- ment. The drawings of the compound engines for the new si ‘ol-war were injured by water, but can be restored, as the last sheet of th. photograp! Consequently uilding these new vessels will not be delayed in the least, as would have been the case aad the drawings and spec fications been destroyed. It is admitted that tome valuable drawiags were destroyed, but it is stated bythe Navy department officials that all of them can be re- tegen although at an additional expense to he department. Such of the plans and draw- ings as were not bi were to-day being <diricd and cleaned by the employes of the department. A FORTUNATE TRANSFER. About six months ago a large number of val- uable documents were transferred from the south wing to the vaultsof the department, and consequently were saved. Owing to ‘the exertions of John H. Brooks and Foreman Parrish, of engine No. 1, but few, probably rot more than ten, of the log-books were totally Sestroyed. The pinding of all of them is charred, but the records frside are ible as before the fire. When it is stated that they comprise a complete nautical history of the late rebellion, and in fact of the Sete States, their value will be fully appre- ciated. ORIGIN OF THE FIRE. ‘The tire was discovered and doubtless origi- nated in room 15, Bureau of Ordnance, on the third floor of the south wing, and as no one was in the vicinity of the room, it is commonly su; that 4 was the result of combustion the accidental combination of Mears, J E Bi ? and James &: Knox, were on duty last night, and did not the fire Inge round of the bullding sg, an they Peveral the night. The flooring, ceilings, wa'ls and doors are burned a'moct t> a cinder, and the roof ts en- tirely torn off in many places. The bu'iding wili at once be ple dim repsir, and w.' probably be ree dy tor occup.ncy in @ sew weeks. THE SOUTH WING to wh'ch the fire was confined, is about 75 by 45 fect, and was built in 182 and 1863, to furnish the addiiion..1 accommodations required by the rebellion. It isof brick, and is three stories high, w.th besement and attic. It was built hact ly *> meet an emergency, and no special Precauiiors were taken against fire. The ro- sult was that it furnished excellent material for the flames, and had it not been for the extra- ordivery ard praiseworthy exertions of out firemen, the entire building would have been consumed. No serious fires have ever before broken out In the present build: In 1842 or 1843 the fire de; nt was called out rt fire which caught irom a chimney ip one of the rooms on te north side of the ba'lding, but it was easily extinguished by the employes. Greer, of the fourth po- lice precinct, detuiled four’men, under the command of Sergeant Kneass, t» take charge of the department, and see that nothing was carried away except by order of the proper of- fiers of the department. NEW QUARTERS WANTED. At present at least one-half of the building is unfit for occupancy, and temporary arrange- ments will be made to quarter some of the clerrs of the department in buildings in the vicinity. Nego.iations were in progress this aiiernoon for the rental of the upper stories of the Governor's office, corner of Pennsylvania avenue and 17th street, 19 the Navy department until the later cun be put in order. THE DAMAGE TO THE BUILDING. Under the circumstarces it is almost impos sible to estimate the damage to the property of the department. The byitding and furniture is damaged probably to the extent of trom $5,00 to $10,000, while it is dificn!t to compute, with any degree of accuracy, the loss of various rec- oras and official documents. It is not probable that the total loss will exceed $25,000, and it may be much less. TRE PRESIDENT INFORMED OF THE P’RE.
