Cholera; the Way to Control It. ‘Though one or more caves have ocourred here bearing the marks of Asiatic cho'ers, they are of the clvss cailed sporadic or single, and with Proper precautions it is quite certain that the disease can be contro!led so that it will not as- sume the epidemic form. We give elsewhere ‘some of the sanitary precautions prescribed by the American Health Association, by the thorough enforcement of which it fs claimed the disease can be averted. It is also well fur the public to have in mind some good remedy for looseness of the bowels, or protective against cholera. More than forty years ago, when it was found thet prevention tor the Asiatic chet- era was easier than care, the lesrned doctors of both hemispheres drew up a pr-scription, which was published (for working people) in the New York Ss, and took the name of the “Sun cholera mixture.”” sound authority, in republishing’ QM pie. Soet tion, declares that it hasseen the remedy in constant use for nearly two score years, apd found it to be the best remedy for looseness of the bowels ever yet devised. It is to be com- amended for several reacons. It is not to be mixed with liquor, and therefore will not be used 9s an alcoholic beveraze; its Ingredients are well known among a!l the common people, and it will have no prejudice to combat; eacti of the materiais is in equal proportion to the others, and it may therefore be compounded Without professional sk Il; and, as the dose is so very small, it may be carried ina tiny vial in the waisteoat pocket, and be always at band. it is:—Tinct. opii, pip.,campho. Mix the above in equal par: dose, ten to thirty drops. in plain terms, take equal parts tincture of opium, red pepper, rhu- barb, peppermint and camphor, and mix them eapci, rhei co., menth | for use. In case of diarrhea, t.ke adose of | ten to twenty drops in three or four teaspoon- fuls of water. and takes it in time, will ever have the cholera. Even when no cholera is anticipated, it is an excellent remedy for ordinary summer com- plaint. An experienced western physician, Dr. Henry Gunoweiih, writes to the Louisyilie Coxrier- Journal, giving the resultsof bis observations in the treatment of the cholera during the summers Of 1849 and "50, and at subsequent periods. One of the first poinis noted was that there was in many, if not in all, cases an entire suspension of the digestive functions. This was evidenced by the fact that patients often threw up articles of food which had been undigesied in their ‘stomachs for twenty-(our or thirty-six hours. Acting upon this idea, he is in the habit of pre- scribing @ mustard and salt emeiic as prelim- nary to all other treatment. A teaspoonful of each in 8 tumbler of warm water is the dose usually employed, and fo!low=d by draught: of warm water, frequently repeated until vomiting ensues; if this docs not oceur, say in a half hour, No one who has this by him, | the patient is required to thrust a finger down | ‘the throat and compel thes »mach to eject ite | contents. Patients are usually found drinking large quanti‘ ics of water and throwing it up almost #8 soon as swallowed, with little or no relief to the intense thirst which exisis. Dr. G. inter- dicta itsuse at once, and a‘ter the act’on of the emetic rcsiricts the patient to small lumps of | fee and an occasional teaspoonful of rice or bar- ley water made cold with ice. There is a wide | difference between allowinz a patient to drink water ad libitum apd permitting him to have it only in the form of ice. In the former case nothing short of a pint or half pint ata time ‘wilt satisfy him, and this so distenis the stomach and irritates it that it is promptly re- jected, to makgroom for s iresh supply. The vomiting is thes kept up, and the prostration of the patient goes on. ‘Yt matters not whether the patient is found effect in arousing the stomach from a torpid condition to healthy action; mp cr | | | } once in two or three hours until the bowels are | checked. ‘While it is a good thing to know of safe, easily | Obtained remedies for cholera or similar dis- eases, these should not displace good medical advice, whenever it is obtainable; first toascer- tain the exact form of the disease, and next to deal with its various stages and fluctuations. —_—_—____e-- In several countries there is @ disposition to revise the jury system, and in Germany the question is about to come to a direct issue. ‘There are two forms of the jury system in use in Germany—the Schoffengericht and Schwur- gericht. The latter corresponds with our system, but the former is peculiar to Germany and German Switzerland. It reserves all questions, both of tact and law, to judges and jarors, who ‘meet together and return a common verdict. ‘The judges are generally three in Bumber, and the jurors net more than six. In the draft for the criminal code, which has been submitted to the Imperial Partiament, the preference is given to the Schoftengericht. —_—__-<ee-____ Expenditures from the District treasury should be strictly guarded, and not a cent ap- Propristed to pay a claim wnless provision is made for a carcful auditing of the same.
