Particulars of the Crime for which he is to.Sufer Death How thé Crime was Traced to Him— What the Prisoner says about It—Catholic Con- ions. (Correspondence of The Evening Star.} LgoxarptTown, St. MaRy’s Oo., Mb., June 22d, 1673,—The principal topic of conversation, which confines itself not alone to Leonardtown, but extends throughout the county, is the ap- proaching execution of Thomas Jackson, now under septence of death, to be carried into ef- fect on the 1ith proximo, for the murder of James Schofield, late postmaster at Fairfield, about 11 miles distant from this place. THE CRIME was committed some six months since, under peculiar circumstances. Schofield was the postmaster at Fairfield, and in the night his store, which served the purposes of an office, was entered; he was killed tion of hisstock in trade stolen, and his body burned in the destruction of the store, the murderer or mur- derers having added arson to their black deed, with a view, possibly, to thus conceal it. For weeks the murder was SHROUDED IN MYSTERY, and the authorities were about to give up any idea of spprebending the guilty ones, whenone of those unaccountable, mysterious’ dispensa- tions of Providence intervened, which, cir- cumstantially at least, established the gnilt of him who, on the 1ith of July, is to be executed. Jackson, the alleged murderer, at a recent ses- sion of the court, was summoned as a witness in @ case entirely foreign to the murder. He came to Leonardtown for this purpose, and portions of his clothing were recognized as having been for gale in the store of Schofield. This fact GAVE RISE TO SUSPICION, and suspicion to investigation, the ‘results of which, coupled with the strange and remark- able, as well as contradictory, stories toki by him, led to his indictment and arraign nest and final conviction as being engaged in the perpe- tration of the horrible tragedy. It is believed that he had two or three accomplices, but thus far, although he has been solicited by his coun- sel, he has tailed to implicate them. Yesterday I calied upon him in his cell. The alr without was warm enough, but within the confines of his small apartment the atmosphere Was almost stifing. He isa man of muscular build, with a bull-dog looking heaa; has a small piercing eye, which betokens cunning and craft; talks freely when interrogated, but volunteers no information not solicited. While he will evidently die game, he fails to realize that he is to be hung, and labors under the impression that the ‘white folks” are trying to «care him. A SHORT CONVERSATION WITH HIM elicited the following : “* Well, Jackson, how old are yon?” “Tl be 49 years old if the Lord spares my life till the 2d of next August.” “ Have you a wife and children ?”” “T have had two wives. My second one is living in Baltimore. She comes to see me oc- casionally.” “Well, Jackson, you had a fair trial I pre sume “Well, boss, I don’t know about that. Some strange stories were told about me that were not true.” «Had you a white or black jury!” “White; we don’t have any niggers on juries down this way.” (ou were satisfied with the jury, were you yh, yes; I think my chances were better with awhite than a black fury. It was the lies that the colored people told that put me bi “What's your religion, Jackson? “1'se a Catholic.” «Does the priest come to see you” “He used to come to see me pretty often. A lady in de village calle upon me once or twice a week and prays with me.”” +I suppose you are preparing for death?” “Well, boss, don’t taik to me about shat. Brave you any tobacco’” [A piece was given him. “You of course cannot expret a — “Well, I ought to have one; 1 ht in the war, and besides I did not kill Mr.‘Schofiel, nor set fire to his house neither.” “Do you know who did, then?”” “Well, now, boss, I’se got to die; what’s the use of me making anybody else suffer?” “Do you sleep well?” “Yes, get along pretty well; awful hot wea- ther, though.”” ‘The prisoner is securely ironed with leg trons. He eats well, and many little delicacl sent him by the Le ored. He likes whisky inordinately, and is given a liberal daily allowance. The execution will take place publicly in the court-house yard, There are whisperings among the col- ored people {hat an attempt will be made to rescue him, but ampic Precautions will be taken to meet such an emergency. Although the former of chéee Yessels has made some préparations for an encounter with the ice, her voyage is not likely to be either long or perilous; it is, infact, little more than a repetition of the service per- formed by the frigate Con, which carried stores for the Polaris to Dises in 1871, under command of the late Captain Davenport. She may possibly be compelled to winter in Green- land, but this is hardly anticipated. The crew of the Tigress, however, will ha to face se- rious dangers and hardships, unleas the Juniata, should get such tidings of the Polaris at Disco or Upernavik as to render further search nnne- cessary—N. ¥. Two or three days since it occurred to them that the society of a woman in their camp would vary the monotony of their camp lite, so they came down to the town of Culpeper, captared a young colored girl, and were making of with er, when her father came to her rescue. They cut the old man’s throat from ear to ear, and then made their escape. The account of the affair which appears in the Warrenton Index does not inform us whether they carried the girl with them or not. The father died from his wounds on Friday last. The mayor of Culpeper organized a party of ten men, and placing Capt. Fultz, one of Mos- by’s scouts, in command, sent them against the “Modocs.”” Before they reached the camp they Were surprised and fired on, (just as Captain Thomas’ men were in the lava beds,) and Wm. Hansborough, one of Capt. Fultz’s volunteers, was so badly wounded in the leg that it is sald amputation will be necessary. The party then retreated, and the ““Modocs” have not since been molested. The name of the commander of these “Modocs” is given as Jamieson, a des ferate character, who seems to be a stranger in one parts. One of his associates is named Williams, an Irishman, well-known in Culpeper, who was a soldier in the confederate army, and was wounded at the first battie of Manassas. THE THORNDIKE (Mz.) TRAGEDY —Revenge Prompted the Triple Murder.—The coroner's jury in the Thorndike (Me.) tragedy completed the inquest yesterday. They find that the fathor mother came to their death in uence of blows inflicted upon their heads and faces with an ax, fracturing their skulls; that the infant either died the same way or diéd from inhaling smoke, heat and fire after the blows were given; that the murders were committed between 12 and 3 o'clock at night; that the fire was kindled in oe og in and upon the bed and crib in which the little boy was sleeping, and that the door leading to the room was closed. The jurors further say that the blows were in- iieted by Jobn True Golden, with malice afore- thenght, and that the fire was kindled and the door shut by him, for the purpose of causin, the bodies of his victims to be consumed anc destroyed. A new motive for the murder—that of revenge—is disclosed by the evidence of a young lady who resides in the vicinity, and to whom Gordon has been paying attention. She recently received anonymous letters tradacing his character, the authorship of which he (Go don) imputed to his sister-in-law. A few da: before the murders were committed he threat ened to be *‘even with her”—so expressed, ar words to that effect. It was also proved that the —— evening previous to the marde: he remarked to his cousin: “I knowone thing— Almon’s life or mine is short in this world.” A Comprication or Horrors.—From time to time the French journals furnish us with trage- dies as singular as they are horrible, and the following is a fair specimen of them: Two = in the wine trade were in financial ifficuities, and many angry interviews occurred between the parties. Wishing to put an end to one of these scemlg M. Descazeau was about to withdraw from his partner's presence, when M. Duploux, in frenzy of passion, rushed upon him with a knife, and stabbed him in the side. The victim fell, and the assassin stabbed himself three or four times in the abdomen. He then rushed up stairs, opened the window, and after driving knife up to the hilt through his left , threw himself into the court. A woman in the house had heard the noise and out to ascertain its cause just as Duploux was falling. His body struck her and she was felied to the ground. Her left arm was broken and she was otherwise greatly injured. Mad- ame Duploux, a young and pretty woman also ed out at this moment, and was so affected by the horrible sight that she is said to have lost her reason, cheek Fash ——_____.
