EVENING STAR. DOUBLE SHEET. May 17, 1973. | At a meeting of the American Social Science Association in Boston on Thursday last a paper on the higher education of woman read by Col. | ‘T. W. Higginson was the occasion for quite an exciting discussion. Col. Higginson argued that the question of sex is out of place in the question of education; that women are as physi- | cally able as men to pursue advanced courses of study; and that woman, like man, should be trained by opening the whole field of knowledge to her and bidding her enter. Prof. Agassiz, Wendell Phillips, Mrs. Julia Ward Howe, Mrs. Ednah D. Cheney, and Mrs. Livermore, all con- eurred with Col. Higginson, but Prof. Agassiz thought that while there should be no discrimi- nation between the sexesin the matter of study, women need a different diet on account of the difference in the physical organization of the sexes. President Raymond, of Vassar (female) College, thought that the question as to whether exactly the same education was suited to both Sexes was as yet an unsettled one, but certainly ‘Women ought to have as high an education as men. Thus far all had gone on harmoniously, when President Eliot, of Harvard College, brought a storm of wrath down upon his devoted head by the expression of his views on the sub- ject. He said he had visited some thirty west- ern colleges which admit both sexes, and had arrived at a conclusion diametrically opposite | to that of Col. Higginson. Oberlin college had been the most successful of any of these insti- tutions, but the experience there was adverse to the plan, because that college began with the Same course of study for both sexes, had separate courses. He believed that the minds of women were as different from those of men as their bodies, and he should not be will- | ing to take the responsibility of admitting | female students to Harvard. Wendell Phillips | was filled with surprise and indignation that | 5imeterin¥ the President of old Harvard, an institution owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, should dare give utterance to such opinions, If only five women in the state should wanslay” enter Harvard during the next the doors ought to be opengd ser and it was seen at once fram the flashing eye thatshe meant business. “Let me) ‘she said, ‘* that ! am neglecting some im- | in stayinghere. But the rea- stand here is that ap encounter of thie adversary of human kind is not to be de- clined on account of business elsewhere. Now the enemy of buman kind I take to be the very Personal and intolerant will which to-day has . had full time and courage to present itself here before us. I wish to say that men who are to have responsibility must be able to learn. If, like the Bourbons, they can neither learn anything nor forget anything, they must give place to a wiser dynasty.” Referring to President Eliot’s allusion to the danger of large numbers of girls being thrown together away from home, she said: “I know there are dark things in that college (Harvard) which are not to be spoken of, which would be seared away like nightmares and dreams, if Women were there.” ‘“( hearts of women, aid me!” was the pathetic invocation with which Mrs. Howe closed her address. Finding it was getting too hot for him, President Eliot retired, without waiting to hear from Mrs. Livermore, who was eager for the e fray. ‘The New York Graphic says Gov. Dix hesi- ‘tates to sign the bill for the annexation of Westchester county to New York, because he ‘wants the people to indicate their approval or disapproval of the measure, and says it is very convenient to have all the honors and emolu- ments of office, and be saved from all its re- sponsibilities. The people directly concerned in the annexation project probably think differ- ently in this particular case, and will doubtless consider the desire which the Governor shows to consult their wishes in a matter ee their interests as worthy of hearty commenda- tion. —_—_-<ee--____ ‘The New York Tribune agrees with the Times in its estimate of Representative Roosevelt's Gemagoguirm in offering bis back pay to the Doard of education, and says there can no longer be any question as to what people generally think about the salary theft, and that the pop- uiar verdict is unanimous that the money ‘belongs nowhere but im the Treasury of the ‘United States. ‘‘ The board of education have -@one a good thing; and our Congressman will | now doubtless see his w2¥ clear to a final deposit | in the United States + TreasuPy/ ” and now | fence | seutheasterly wi ‘and nd partly cloudy weather in a We have given considerable space to-day to & Teport of the discussion inthe House of Dele- | gates, last evening, on the bill known as the | $300,060 loan bill, which provides for refunding | to the Board of Public Works the amount of | the percentage paid by them to negotiate the | $4,000,000 improvement loan. The importance of the subject will cause it to be read with in- | terest, particularly by the tax- ‘payers of the District, who will watch with some solicitude the course of members wn reference to the bill. It is mortifying to learn, as we do by by our tele- graphic dispatches to-day, that the original charges of fraud a: t corruption in connection with the American department of the Vienna | exposition appear to be fully sustained by the investigation now in progress.
