Colonel Jobn L. Smith, a former well-known resident of this Distr: died yesterday at his resent residence, in Anne Arundel county, d., (near Jessups Cut, on the B. & U. R. K.,) after an fflness of several months. Colonel Smith in years gone by occupied a prominent ition in District affairs. He was born on Yoxistana atense, near the City Hall, and Jearned the trade of printer under Gales & Seaton, in the National Intelligencer office, and Subsequently (with Mr. C. C. Fulton, now of the Baltimore American,) he bought out and ublished the Georgetown Adrocate, a tri-week- jy paper. This was a few years before the Har- rison and Tyler campaign, and the firm being staunch whigs, backed by Wm. C Preston, of South Carelina; Wm. , of Virginia; and N. P. Tallmadge, of a 4 Harrison campaign paper—the Republican Rerivw. After the campaign had closed the firm was dissolved, and Mr. Fulton continued to publish the Adrecate for some time. Col Smith returned to the case at the National Inteitigencer office. Subseqnently he was ap- Pointed a justice of the peace, and for several years acted as police magistrate in this city, @nd his office became one of the leading ones in Washington. While acting as a magistrate he | found time to study law, and was admitted to the bar im April, Isi9. About the commencement of the war he removed to Baltimore and practiced law there, and was elected to the legislature of Maryland, serving im the session of Is¢4.
