THE SA¥ETY OF THE PoLARIs.—The Secre- tary of the Navy entertains the opinion, from all the information he has thus far received, that the Polaris is in a condition to reach Disco or some other extreme northern she will soon be heard of. He will, however, in the course of a few days select some suitable vessel of the navy and send her out in charge ot capable officers to search for the Polaris and render such assistance as mer be necessary. Of course it will be impossible for any vessel penetrate the northern seas very far £0 early in the season, but when the ice Lege a to break up in the summer in that latitude there may be some hope of rescuing the Polaris, Those on board of her have an abundance of provisions and all things necessary for their comfort, and no fears are entertained here for their safety. Tue Concressionat EXCURSION TO THE SovtuweEst.—Arrangements have been maae to extend the Congressional excursion from Galveston to New Orleans by steamer across the guif. From there the excursionists will be taken down the Mississippi river to Balize, where they will have an opportunity to observe the obstructions to navigation, caused by the bar at the mouth of the river. They will also be banquetted and otherwise entertained, and returned to their homes by railroad free of ex- pense.
