Mr. Blaine is too astute a politician not to see that this early mention of his name for the Presidency is cal- culated to do him more harm than good, and so we are safe in assuming that the present talk about him in that connection has been without his instigation or consent. If the Indians are still about there in positions where they cannot be shelled, the most feasible way of conquering them ‘would seem to be to cut them off from the lake, to which recent dispatches say they still resort for water. Any other plan would doubtless cause a disproportionately heavy loss of life on our skle. | It is now stated as certain that the Baltimore | and Ohio railroad will next month commence — running passenger trains to the West from both | Baltimore and Washington over the Metro- Politan branch road. The date is even men- tiened—the 13th—and it is declared, also, that the time tables have already been arranged. ‘This sounds like business, and yet similar assur- ances have been given from time to time for many years. There is no doubt, however, that the road is ready for work, but the belief has pre- | vailed in Washington that Mr. Garrett did not intend to put it in opergtion until he had com- | pleted his Gaithersburg and Laurel cut-off, by which he could take western passengers and freight over the Metropolitan road to Baltimore without coming to Washington.
