EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page { WASHINGTON CITY: | To Ovum Apvantisexs—in a so } the great pressure upon our advertising col- Umns, we have to ask of customers that they will send in their advertisements as early in the ay as possible that they may be properly classi- fled. Our business men appreciate the advan- tages of an advertising medium like tnat of ‘Tue Stan, which has not only an immensely Preponderating circulation over any other | paper, bat which has also a general circulation | amongst all eiasses, and therefore reaches pur- chasers of every variety and style of goods and ares, I a The recent ‘enthusiastic’ mention of Speaker Biaine’s name for the Presidency at some din- ner-table sitting of a few gentlemen of some Political prominence, seems to have caused quite a ferment in various quarters, and the Protectionists of Pennsylvania, it is hinted, are disposed to make warfare upon the proposed nomination, on the ground that Mr. Blaine is hot sound on the tariff question—that is to say, though not a free-trader, he is supposed to favor & reduction on high tariff rates where reduction is just and practicable. Mr. Blaine is too astute a politician not to see that this early mention of his name for the Presidency is cal- culated to do him more harm than good, and so we are safe in assuming that the present talk about him in that connection has been without his instigation or consent. But if the Pennsylvania protectionists really go | on in this blundering way of declaring oppo- fition to him in advance, they will put the free- | traders up to considering the question of his eligibility as a candidate on their platform; and FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, The Wall street markets yesterday were dis- tinguished early in the day by easier rates for money. but before the call loans were dearer, the extreme rate bei: aoe 1-16 and interest. The high-tariff men had better not be too vociferous in proclaiming who they will or Won't have for President. a ‘The dispatches from the lava beds which we publish to-day seem to Indicate that the Mo- | docs, after being shelled oat of their natural | the Gefences last week, merely retreated to new | biding places in the rocky fastnesses, every foot of which is familiar to them. The evidence of this scems very clear. Wandering Modoes still “vother the troops” in camp by desultory firing, | attacking pack trains, &c., while a circuit of tue lava beds fails to discover an Indian trail, and our cavalry returned to camp from their wild-goose chase without having encountered or heard of any of Captain Jack’s men outside of their old haunts. That the Modocs can easily keep up their game of hide and seek in the lava beds, is demonstrated by Professor Hayden's Cescription of these basaltic rocks and the innu- | merable nooks and craunies by which they are perforated and the food which the savages can find in them, which was published in Taz Stan a few dayssince. If the Indians are still about there in positions where they cannot be shelled, the most feasible way of conquering them ‘would seem to be to cut them off from the lake, to which recent dispatches say they still resort for water. Any other plan would doubtless cause a disproportionately heavy loss of life on our skle. | It is now stated as certain that the Baltimore | and Ohio railroad will next month commence — running passenger trains to the West from both | Baltimore and Washington over the Metro- Politan branch road. The date is even men- tiened—the 13th—and it is declared, also, that the time tables have already been arranged. ‘This sounds like business, and yet similar assur- ances have been given from time to time for many years. There is no doubt, however, that the road is ready for work, but the belief has pre- | vailed in Washington that Mr. Garrett did not intend to put it in opergtion until he had com- | pleted his Gaithersburg and Laurel cut-off, by which he could take western passengers and freight over the Metropolitan road to Baltimore without coming to Washington. We shall be very agreeably disappointed if he does not post- yone opening the Metropolitan road until he has coustructed his cut-off. —_.ce--___ It appears by the Tennessee papers that the farmers of that state have entered upon the co- Operative movement, through the formation of | granges of the Patrons of Husbandry, whieh in | Illinois, Iowa and elsewhere have taken initi- ative steps for the protection of agriculturists from the encroachments of other classes that boards of trade, transportation conventions, manufac- | turers’ and mechanics’ societies, and, above all, railway monopolies, to their prejudice. There | pe beeen nein aren ere rapidly throughout the country, but the danger | is that It will fall into the hands of political speculators and demagogues, and fritter away all ite real power for usefulness. ———— sae Tee ATLANTIC AND GeEatT Waesters Cayat—aA call has been issued by Governor | Smith, of Georgia, for a convention of gover- nors and other prominent citizens at Atlanta, to consider the propristy of constructing a canal from the Tennessee river, at Guntersville, Alabama, to Savannah, Georgia, by way of the Coosa, Etowah and Ocmulgee rivers; thus con- necting the Mississippi river and its tributaries with the sea on the Georgia coast. The advanta- ges claimed are that the line is 400 miles shorter | than by the present route, through a country | that is not effected by frost, and will build up | the business interests of the South and open a | market for the surplus products of the West, besides bringing into closer and friendlier rela. | tions the two sections. oe The Morning Cadaver viciously expressss its determination to live as long as possible, so that it may keep {ts eyes open to watch any schemes of Tuz Stax. Alas! we are afraid those bright, vigilant, virtuous orbs will soon be closed, and weighted down by the proceeds of a copy of the immortal Evewrse Star, which shines for all, Price two cents. But we submit that it is not | quite fair in the Cadaver, after enjoying its good things in life, and faring sumptuously | every day on credit mobilier, extra-compensa- | Tende?, thon, railroad and Indian steal swag, to be | haunting its living cotemporaries to see that they don’t get any nice little tid-bits. It is Cownright hoggish. ‘The Springfield Repudlican suggests thats | few words from Charles Sumner on the sub- ject of the salary grab would have a positive value for the country under ex- | isting circumstances, and a still greater value | for Charles Sumner’s {riends in Massachusetts. | It adds: a) “He is the most disti gentlemen. wane en Taree | tions wich gain not Set eels oo tal to right to cultivate his al diguian ck the expense of his public .!
