Nineteen of _illo Savages Killed During the Threo Days’ Fight, Stragglers Found Daily, and Summarily Dis- patched. Effect of the Shell-Shower upon tho Indian Stronghold, Indications of Trouble with Other Indien Tribes. Spectal Dispatch to The Chicago Tribune. In Tur LavA-Beps, HEADQUARTERS oF GEN. Grunear, April 10, } This morning the' command of Col. Porry ‘broko camp at 3 5. m,, and mounted to pursue thoe escoping Modocs that have taken to, tho mountaina for eafoty, and to secure tho squaws that had moved to tho timbored mountain south of Tulo Lake, and about five miles south of the orovices that formod tho stronghold of tho Mo- docs during the hoavy shelling. On the 17th, they mado a charge upon the. right wing of Col. Millor's command and wore repulsed, but thoy did* not rolish tho idon of holng forced to die of thirst,. and about 9 o'clock that ovoning thoy again charged upon tho same placo, and fow of thom went through tho lincs, and some stole out at tho gap that ro- mained opon at the right and loft wings of the forcos. Tho mojority of them are now missing, and aro supposed to havo passed through in the same manner. Yostordsy, tho 18th. inst., Com- panies K ond F, First Oavalry, made o chargo upon the loft of the sinks, and earried their po- sition, and moved tholr whole force for- ward and took the Modicine Man's medicine- bag nnd polo, and killed Scar-Faced Charloy during the chargo. Privato Moore, of K Com- pany, First Oavalry, gave him the fatal shot, and Cherloy waa ecalped by the TFirst Sorgoant, Googe A. Leo, who, with his banner of tho Mod- icino ‘Man and Charloy's scalp, was roady to moot his fato. Tho attacking party were cov- ored during the chargs by tho mortars. Thoy did oxcollont work, and wo may attributo tho victory to tho woll-oxoouted work that was ac- complished by those, in chargo of thom, Aftor tho firing had cedsed, an oxamination was made, and . pleces of ghell were found in thoe alcove that offercd sholtor to the cnomy, and this was ovident by tho finding of Boston Clinrloy's body, that was litorally torn to plocos. Everything had beon romoved to somo place of socurity, and nothing was found of value. They hnad no provisions, ne has boon reportod by many that had beon in the cave and stronghold; no ice, no wator, and wero minus of that nice littlo stream that runs .through the cave. All that was found in the yay of provisions was old, rotten boof, and n very small quantity. All tho ponics were captured before tho fight commenced, and they are unmounted in their flight, with tho oxcoption of the four horses that thoy captured from Eugono Hovoy and Mr. Watson. They killed young Hovey and took his ecalp, maebing bis head with & largo rock, There was & hole mado by & knifo in his right breast, and his intestines were lot out by a cut across tho sbdomen. Ho recoived throo shota boforo ho fell, two in tha right shouldor, and ono in tho head, This is anotbor person that ias fallen o proy to the blood-thirsty vil- lains. Eugeno Hovey was a youngand woll-respected ‘man, just dawning into mankood, and o procious mombor of his paronts’ family, who partly looked to him for sustenance. A party went out and socured his body, and brought it into camp laut night, and it was intorred to-day with tho dend that wore killed during the fight. 1t appears that this same party of Modocs came up in tho rear of Battery Il of the Fourth Astillory, and fired upon them in their retroat, killing Sorgeant Morgan, but ran at the return fire. During tho threo days’ engagement 19 Modocs havo boen killed, including one squaw and ong papoose, and it is supposed that more were Inllod and burned up beforo thoy doparted, as skulls and teoth aro visiblo whoro the firo was tho night before they left. The wondorful cave, which has beon so minutoly doscribod, proves to be nothing but a long crovico that has beon made during somo orruption in the past, and oxtonds north and south for nbout omo snd o balf miles, and adjoining it ere numerous round and deep sinks which aro capablo of . giving a groat defensive forco if usod as they were by the Indians, There is, now and then, such a sink found, that still holds a stragglor or wounded Modoe, but they nro soon dispatched when found by the soldlors. During the cliarges, thoy found a wounded Modoe, who, after firing upon them whon thoy were coming up to him, asked and bogged for moroy, but the boys are too much enraged by them to allow moroy to such a doemon, and shot him dead. They afterwards found auather and cut his head off, and overy man that ‘| passed relieved his mind by giving Lim around of twa for oxercieo, and in memory of Gon. Canby's murder, Thoy have takon no prigoners and shown no quarter so far, The Warm Spring Indians are in hot pursuit of those that flod, and say that thoy will not lonvo oue of thom to ropresont tho tribe when found., Com- panies K, I, B, and G, First Cavalry linve taken the right and loft wings of tho chase and tho ‘Wearm Bprings the contro, and no news from thom lns boon received since their do- parture. Yesterday, as tho skirmishers woro oxploring the slnks, thoy oamo upon flve Modocs that had been cut off from thoso that loft tho stronghold, They did not fire l|Pon tho ranks until they were in quar- tora so close that tho powdor brrned the boya'. faces.
