Noy W Chamber NEW YORK, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23, 1873—QUADRUPLE SHEET: ‘PRICE FOUR CENTS. SPECIAL NOVICES, —OYSTER CONTROVERSY BETWEEN TWO A. States.—It will be remembered that in the Fall of 1868 a large bed of seed oysters was discovered near the mouth of Bridgeport, Conn., harbor. The greater part of this bed would fall within a line drawn from headland to headland of the Connecticut and until recently it has always been admitted to pe: to and form a por- tion of that State, Some pretensions to the contrary hay- ing lately been advanced, a convention of Connecticut ystermen met at Bridgeport February 7 and 22, 1873, and, r forming & permanent State association and appoint- img # committee to memorialize the Legislature, passed resolutions pledging its members to use every exertion to bring to justice all non-residents attempting’ to take any rare. clams or shell fish within the waters of the State icompectent. A committee of seventeen was also ap- pointed to prosecute all trespassers. All persons interested are respectially requested to take Notice that the question of boundary between Connecti- cut on the north and New York State on the south is well settled; and their attention is called to 4 decision, ren- dered in May, 1871, by Judge Shipman, of the United States District Court, in the case of Keyser vs. Coe. The rules in controversies touching the boundaries of States do not differ mate: ly from those relating to the boundaries of land between individuals. In both cases resort must be had to documents of title, such as grants, charters and deeds, and in the second place to evidence of use and pcoupation, All the great documents of title— viz., the Warwick patent of 1631, the famous Charter of Connecticut, granted by Charles IT. in 1662, and the io nitothe Duke of York in 1664, concur in bounding onnecticuton the south by the sea—that is, by the At- antic Oces and until if Connecticut in fact did ex- ercise jurisdiction over that part of Long Island abreast of her shorea The islands on the north shore of the Sonnd have also uniformly been held and occupied, by citizens of Connecticut down to the present time. The decision of Judge Shipman is, therefore, that a straight line drawn tromthe extremity of Point Judith, extend- ing westward Karty leagee to Lyon's Point, at the mouth ot Byram River, the tree boundary line between the States. Sucn a line would pass several miles south ot the oyster bed at present in dispute, and would conseq! eauy. leave it entirely within the jurisdiction of ticut, A LARGE WAGON FOR MOVING FURNITURB— City or country ; Furniture, Pianotortes, &c., packed, shipped or stored.
