EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District Beading Matter on Every Page {° To Ovn Apvertisens.—In consequence of the great pressure upon our advertising col- umns, we have to ask of customers that they | ill send in their advertisements as early in the day as possible that they may be properly clasei- fed. Our business men appreciate the advan- tages of an advertising medium like tnat of Tus Stax, which has not only an immensely | preponderating circulation over any other | paper, but which has also a general circulation amongst all classes, and therefore reaches pur- chasers of every variety and style of goods and wares. seen. Gas Without Coat. ‘The attempts heretefore made to manufac- ture gas by the decomposition of water, and the subseq nent carbonization of the product by | the use of petroleum, or bituminous materials, have not heretofore reached practical success, though the experiments have been interesting in suggesting possibilities in this way. Now, however, anew gas of this description has been developed in England, which is spoken of approvingly by a scientific journal of stand- ing, the London Nature, and which also receives t avorable notice from the New York Jowrnal of | This gas, invented by # Mr. Ruck, itis asserted, be used in one form for heating purposes. and in another for illumina- ton; and made out of the cheapest substances, by a very simple methorl, and at small cost. As in the various water gas processes, Mr. obtain Rack | his hydrogen by passing steam through escent co! at his mode difters from that of other inventors in one pss oi she.) «say, chain or any | se) are mixed, and the oxygen of the composed water attaches itself to the iron, forming scales of black rust, and then the hydrogen passes into a purifying chamber in a comparatively free condition. | The etfect of the iron is to promote the perfect | separation of the two gases composing water— that work being more tardily done by the action of the red-hot coke alone. The charge of iron and coke in the retorts does not need to be re- newed for several weeks. This heating gas is said to cost, for making, only 7d. per 1,000 cubic feet. which suffices to boil about fifty gallons of cold water. By a familiar arrangement it could be used im stoves or fire-places. The cost would be reduced by using the waste heat of the re- tort furnace to raise the steam, instead of sup- plying it independently from a boiler. For Highting purposes, this hydrogen gas is made to babble throngh a reservoir containing rec tiled petroleum of a specitic gravity of about 0.639, and t then ready for circulation aud cousump- tion. and is reported by Nefure-to bave an illu- ing power of 16% candles (a good stand- with a tow of five cubic feet an hour in an Argand burner. In this form the gas costs less than Is. Sd. per 1,000 cubic feet; the cost of ordinary coal-manufaectured gas in London - 4d., when coal is 2. a ton. The difficulty, heretofore, with all the substi- tute gases has been their instability, and the question bas been raised whether the new gas is permanent compound, capable of passing for long distances through pipes in all weathers without disintegratin, The scientific journal referred to says that in a number of experi-, ments made its permanence seems to be estab- lished, and it has been shown that when deliv- ered at points remote from the works there is uo perceptible loss of illuminating power. It | is also stated that the necessary works for ‘he manufacture of this gas are so compact tnat those at Battersea, occupying about the space of an ordinary well-packed steam engine of twenty or thirty horse-power, are large enough to supply gas to a town of 4,000 inhabitants. | ‘The assertion is also made that only one-thir- | tieth the number of laborers are needed in the manufacture of this gas that are required in | the old process of coal distillation. It is hardly probable that all these sanguine claims in behalf of the new gas can be estab- lished, but it would seem—according to the | adage that Necessity is the mother of Inven- ton—not unlikely that the present coal famine in England will quicken the inventive powers of the nation to the discovery of some more | economical mode of making illuminating gas | than by the present process of the distillation ot eval. — It is a consoling thought to the opponents of! the “Quaker Policy” to know that the noble | red men of the forest are not increasing in | numbers in a way to perpetuate the line of | Capt. Jacks. Im fact they are fading away | with accelerated rapidity as the report of the ninth census attests. According to this report, which in respect to the enumeration of wander- ing tribes of Indians must necessarily be in- accurate, there were in 1870 but 25,731 redmen in all the states and territories against 44,021 in 1880. This shows a total decrease in a single | decade of 18,280, or about 415 per cent. of the | whole number in 1860. Should this per cent- | age of decrease continue there will have | | “passed away” by the year 1580 10,600 souls which will leave but 15, Indians on the con- tinent at that date. At the same rate of | decrease in 1800there will be but 8,852 remain- ing; im 1900 but 5,000; in 1910, 3,000; in 1920, 1,755; in 1960 about 1,000; in 1919 aYout 600; and | in 1990 but about 350, and so om, the number getting smaller and beautifully less until every vestige of the race will have faded out. It may not be generally known that a large majority of all the Indians on this continent sre in the states, and not in the territories. ‘Thecensus puts down the total number in the ~fates at 21,228, and in the territories but 4,503. «f the former number Michigan has 5,925, and | 7,241. The largest number in any | ¢ territory is 1,519 in Washington territory. 1860 there were 10,507 Indians in New Mexi- | now there are but 1.30%. The enumeration | dians does not include half-breeds living | *> the whites and cultivating the soil in locali- | ties mbabited {by whites, but does include | ha!r-breeds Mving ina wild state among the | fui bloods. oe ‘That plitk of propriety, General Farnsworth, writes @ very long letter saying that he means to «tribute his extra compensation among the dit: rent counties of his Congressional district; smi om this text he bokds forth at great length to show what @ set of scamps the Congressmen are who take the extra pay, and, by compari- ~wn — exceedingly honorable and high- t gentleman is ex-Representative Farns- . a It is a pity the General’s high moral convietions come in play so late in his official earcer. ——_—__-«ee- ‘The Republican of this morning had a full ac- ee -mtof the arrest of Pardee alias the Rev.
