He was yesterday presented by M. M. Kaighn, ‘ident of the New Jersey republican asso- ation, with a handsomely engrossed letter, signed ‘by the presidents of the several state associations, testifying their appreciation of his courtesy, honesty and ability as an officer of the government. How THE PREsipENT Draws His SALARy.— ‘The President never draws bis salary bimself, but receives it through the First National Bank, to which he has given a power of attor- ney, and the money is always drawn from th ‘Treasury by the cashier of that bank and pl to the credit of the President in the bank. warrants for the salary of the President and Vice President are made out at the Treasury every month, former under the new law receiving $4,106.06 per month, and the latter $853.33. COURTS-MARTIAL meral Orders oo from the War depar nt calls attention to paragraph &2,revised regulations for thearmy, of 1803, and a strict compliance therewith in eis enjoined. The paragraph read=:— enever the same court-martial tries more prisoners than one, and they are arraigned on teparate and distinct charges, the court is to be sworn at the commencement of each trial, and the proceedings in each case will be made up separately.” The order says It isnot con- sidered a compliance with this regulation to call several prisoners into court at the same time amd swear the members of the court once befdre them all.’” ‘THE SELECT SENATE ODMMITTEE ON TRANS- PORTATION met in this city yesterday. Mr. Hinckley, of the Phi'adelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore railroad, was present, with a list showing certain persons to whom’ the depart- ment had given passes to ride on the postal ears, but who, he stated, have no connection whatever with the post office service. Included in this list are grocers, tradesmen, and a num- ber of women. The railroads complain bitterly of this, and also allege that in many instances the po.tal cars are used for the transportation of freight by these parties. Col. Carrington, president of the James river and Kanawha canal, was present, and addressed the commit- tee in’ explanation’ of the scope and design of that work. He extended an invitation to the members to visit the line of the work, which they will probably do some time during the summer, starting trom Norfolk or Richmond. Messrs. Casserly, Mitchell and Davis, of West Va., were appointed as a sub-committee to proceed to the Pacific coast and investigate the freight charges of the Union Pacific and Cen- tral Pacific railroads, of which there is great complaint among the poorte of that section. The sub-committee will also look into other matters coming within the scope of their in- quiry. It was decided that the sub-committee would employ no clerk, and that each member should pay his own personal expenses. pi delet ienmane Tue New ORLEANS RACES yesterday resulted as follows: First race, one mile. THE MANNER OF GENERAL CANBY'S DEATE The following additioual particulars of rie massacre of the peace Commissioners have been received : Captain Anderson was at Colonel Mason's camp when the attack was made on the peace commissioners and party. They went tour hundred or five hundred yards, where they met what they suppoted were only two Indians, who said they wanted to talk to“ Little Tyce”—Colonel Mason. They were told that they (the officers) did not want to talk, and for the Indiaus to go back to their camps, and they (the officers) would retarn to theirs. As the ‘othoers turned around the Indians, four in number, fired upon them, Founding Licut. Sherwood tm the arm and igh. Captain Anderson, who was on duty at the signal station on Hospital Rock, saw plainly the attack upon Colonel Mason’s front, and tele- craphed to General Gillem to notify the peace Commissioners immediately.
