WASHINGTON CITY: SATURDAY «+ Saly 27, 11872, The Star By Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer, or any portion of it, can have Tue Star mailed to their address for such time as they desire, at the rate of tf cents per month. Orders, accom- panied by the money, shoald be sent to the busi- ness office of the paper. It is but fair to say in regard to the reported bargain between Greeley and Seymour et al that Mr. Carmichael, the alleged go-between in the transaction denies the main stetements of the story. Carmichael says that some “common Place” correspondence bss passed between him and Mr. Greeley, and that he approached the latter in regard to running for the Presidency, but received no other encouragement than the answer by Mr. G. “that the people were at Liberty to talk matters up among themselves. Hie (Carmichael) approached Greeley on the subject of «eeing Horatio Seymour and leading members of the democratic party, when “Mr Gree at would not do atall, and wished the interviewuthen and there to be considered aid ry ended Carmichael, however, did see Sey mour hout consulting any one, still having Teacon to th hat Greeley was the best man for Chief Magistrate in the country. Gov. Sey- mour stated that he did not desire to walk over the lint, but there was one thing he wished to say, that if the republican party was disposed tochange the administration the democratic Party, as far ashe knew, was willing to treat them fairly and take no advantage of the move- ment. £ mentioned Greeley’s name, but the Governor remarked that there were besides Lim ther promineat Tepubli- fans, such as Trumbull and Chase, who would be acceptable to men of both parties.’ Carmichael says there was no reference made in that conversation ‘‘to paying confederate sol- diers pensions, bat the Governor alluded to the §radual softening of passions and prejudices growing out of the war, & Neither was any- thing said to Greeley on this subject of pension- ing confederate soldiers, but Carmichael admits that he, himself, favors that project, and he impliedly argues that Greeley, if elected. would not oppose it. This is the way Carmichsel puts it: “What ts the erence between supplying a one-legged or ‘m soldier in a southern poor- house and ma g Lim the ward of the nation? ‘The expense to the people is the same. Who Would pause in bestowing food and shelter to a widow and orphan when in want because the husband and father fel! bravely fighting on the Kappahannock or Mississippi in the lost cause? No one; and there is, besides, what is generous and lorgiving te be considered. nf neg ple of the south are our brethren, who, ind erred, paid the penalty. If we are to have a U felon let t he so in fact ax well asin name. Mr. Greeley Promises in good faith to bring about—and the People up here believe And now it turns out that General Alfred Pleasanton, ¢x-Commissioner of Internal Rey- enue, isthe man referred to by Carl Shurz as having attempted a negotiation with him for his support of the San Domingo project for the Pleas consider anton by on of executive patronage. ng called upon by ward and ascerts that he the of President: that is to say, be has net impression” that the President the Senator's support and was willing to for it by patronage. Pool nad been «costal prize-fighter, and wasa fellow of adurance, as proved not ility to receive any amount of ponies! shment in the prize-ring and in the bar- room encounters, but especially by the fact that he lived for eleven days with a bullet in his heart, the post mortem showing that the ball was imbedced between the right and left ven- tricle of that delicate organ. This circumstance excited the a-topishment of medical men at the time. as a similar case had never before been heard of. McMutlen was shot through the left breast, just above the heart. The ball has not yet been located or removed, but is believed to have perforated the lung. Notwithstanding this it is thought he will recover owing to hisre- markable vitality and wonderful powers of en- durance. Should the belligerent alderman sur- ‘i y look for another shooting affray in as McMullen is a firm believer in talents. +02 —_____ A Cincinnati paper gives a dramatic, but re- Volting, account ef the slaughter of several hundred impounded dogs by “two stalwart buteber boys, armed with sledge-hammers.” According to the account, “‘for nearly an hour the slaughter was kept up, and at the close not & dog survived in the place bespattered with their bieod. The execation was asad spectacle, ‘The fran ¢ captives dodged the blows aimed at them with f agility, and made wonderfal leaps up the wall in search of place of safety. ‘The executioners were fully equal to the occa- sion, seeming to delight in their horrid work. Very often their first blow failing to take effect, they would repeat it with crushing force, half a dozen times, each biow followed by a how! of sgony from the terrified animal. Many of the x cor brutes lived for many minutes after being «ruck, and writhed around in every shape that magination could re.’ A correspondent the New York Evening Post humanely sug- sts that impounded dogs be confined in an retight room and a stream of carbonic acid 44s discharged into the apartment. This, he il them in less than five minutes, certainly have the merit of mercy. Contributions to the children’s excursion fund are being received in New York at the rate of from $000 to $1,000 per day. It is gratifying to know tat the movement is very popular, and that enough money will be contributed to give ull the little ones in charitable institations, at least, one pleasant excursion during the sum- mer. The aggregate amount received in New York up to Thursday night was $13,290.30. In Philadelphia, the children’s free excursion fund now amounts to about $8,000. It has been de- termined that the excursions shall be for juve- niles under five years of age and sick children over that age, the children to be accompanied by their mothers, nurses or other care-takers, Who will lead off in this city in getting up free excursions for the little ones? — — ‘The New York Herald devoted its whole ed- itorial page yesterday to its Stanley-Livingstone discoveries, including a characteristic letter from the Doctor to Mr. Bennett. Mr. Colfax supports the ticket, bat his health will not permit bim to make speeches this cam- paige.
