_EVENING STAR. "CROSBY 8. NOY Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: THURSDAY........-..----Jaly 25, 1872, The Star By Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer, or any portion of it, can have Taz Star mailed to their address for such time as they desire, at the rate of fifty cents per month. Orders, accom- panied by the money, should be sent to the busi- bess office of the SS A Strange Chapter in in the History of The letter of Jacob Sea J. P. Ben- jamin, secretary of state of the southern con- tederacy, found among the confederate archives which have recently been sold to this govern- ment and alluded to im yesterday’s Star, is published to-day. It bears date, Toronto, C. W., December 3d, 1865, and the endorsement in J. P. Benjamin’s hand-writing, “ Received 13th February, tf J.P.B.” In bis letter Thomp- son says he had no difficulty in obtaining al the necessary information in regard to the or- genization known as the “Sons of Liberty,” which organization was essentially military, having its commanders of divisions, brigades, regiments, &c., and whose object was to secure the independence of the confederacy. In June, 1-7, he says, “ The belief was entertained and freely expressed that by a bold, vigorous and concerted movement the three great north- western states of lilinois, Indiana, and Ohio could be seized and held. This being done, the states of Kentucky and Missouri could easily be lifted from their prostrate condition and placed on their feet, and this in sixty days would end the war.” The 16th of August was fixed upon for a gen- eral uprising throughout the north and west, but just previous, says Thompson, “a large lot of arms were purchased and sent to Indianap- olis, which was discovered, and some cf the leading men were charged with the design to arm the members of the order for treasonable purposes. Treachery showed itself at Louis- ville. Judge Bullitt and Dr. Kaltus were ar- rested and sent to Memphis.” This project, it seems, would have been carried out had it not been for Mr. McDonald, democratic candidate for governor of Indiana, who believed it would mar bis prospects for election, and threatened to expose the plot if the leaders did not desist. Soon after the “Sons” became demoralized by the surveillance exercised by the government, and virtually disbanded as an organization, ‘Thompeon vext tells the story of the attempt de to capture the United States steamer Michigan and the reasons of its failure, and tells how the Island Queen was sunk near Johnson's island. The capture of the Michigan Was to be followed by ashot through the officers’ quarters at Johnson’s island as a signal for the release of the confederate prisoners. Thompson Bex: gave bis attention to the federal currency, and “urged the people of the north to convert their paper inte gold and withdraw it from the market.” This policy he thinks was adopted to @ certain extent, as gold continued to appre- ciate until it reached 200, Subsequently Thomp- son advanced a Mr. Minor Major $2 etroy steamboats on the Mississippi, “and soon atterward several boats were burned at St- Louis, involving an immense loss of property to the enemy.” Money wasalso advanced to “a Mr. Churchill, of Cincinnati, toorganize acorps tor the purpose of incendiarism in that city,” and, adds Thompson, “I consider him « true » and although as yet he has effected but little, | am in constant expectation of hearing of effective work in that quarter.” Further on ‘Thompson says Lieut. Colonel Martin, C.S. A., “was allowed to organize a corps to burn New a most daring attempt has been made to fire that c but their reliance on the Greek fire has proved a misfortune. It cannot be depended on as an agent in such work.” He says the Presidential election of 1364 so demor- alized the leaders of the “* Sons of Liberty” that & new organization, styled the “Order of the Star,” became necessary, its objects being the same as those of the “Sons.” In closing his letter, Thompson says be had spent about $700,000 of the $1,000,000 placed in his hands. +200 ‘The dry legal routine of the Barnard im- peacbment trial at Saratoga was relieved Tues- day by a genuine sensation, being the appear- ance of the netorious Josie Mansfield as a wit- ness im the case. The old story of Barnard’s connection with Fisk, the latter’s present to the incorruptible judge, the Erie troubles, the visits to Albany and Poughkeepsie and Jersey City— ali this, and more was gone over by the witness in her accustomed unembarrassed manner, and created no little interest. Now and then at some facetious reply given with a touch of wit, in which the witness cannot be said to be lack- ing, a general laugh would ensue. As the ex- amination went on the relations of Barnardand Fisk and Gould and Morgan and the Grand Opera House and the mansion in 23d street and the sojourn of the troubadours im Jersey City were touched on, and Barnard’s connection with it all came out pretty clearly. According to the witness, he had been several times with Fisk at her house in 2ith street—say seven; several times also at her house in 2d street. She had seen him at the Grand Opera Honse, and at Long Branch. She had congratulated him on the receipt of a very handsome present from Fisk, in trust for the Judge's child. Fisk had told ber it was no less than $10,000. His honor mo- destly told her it was but the paltry sam of $1,900. She had never bad curiosity enough to arrive at the real truth. It wasn’t to be supposed that her visiting list contained only such men as Farnard and Fisk and Gould and Stokes. She gave dinners at “my house in Twenty- third street.” She received some of the “ best citizens of New York” at “ my house in Twenty- third street.” Woald she mention one or two? Ob, yes; s Judge Barnard, Recorder Hackett, Judge McCunn, Judge Bedford, the Attorney General of the State, and others. ~ Any member of the Bar Association” asked Dir. Austria, it is said, agreed to act in cert with Italy and Germany provided rance would do the same, but M. Thiers has ,tly refused to enter into any arrangement of ‘be k.nd, at the same time declaring that in his pinion the right of the veto has longagoceased in every country in Europe, and that, were it otherwise, he would never sanction any inter- ference of the state in religious matters. The College of Cardinais have resolved that upon the death of the present Pope, if any attempt is made to influence their votes they will at once Proceed to Malta and hold the election there. The following conversation with one of them ts about the sum and substance of the whole: **How do the people stand?” “Some are for Greeley and some are Grant, and some haven’ concluded yet just whar they “How about the colored me: h, they are all for Grant. ‘on’t any of them go for Greeley?” I don't know of any one. “al ‘We have no intelligence from Mexico to-day confirming or denying the reported death of President Jufrez. If the news is true, the con- dition of that unhappy country will probably be worse, if that is possible, than ft has been. Juarez was not a model raler, but allowance must be made for the hard task imposed on him. That he has managed to hold the reins of power so long in that unruly country is proof that he must have kad in him something of the governing spirit, reinforced by some strength of character and native shrewdness. ‘The master masons of London have made an arrangement by which nine hours are to consti- tute a day’s work, the reckoning being made by taking the average of the whole year, giving jess than nine hours in winter and enough more than nine bours in summer to equalize the time. ‘The carpenters have effected a compromise with their employers by agreeing to abide by a code of working rules to be settled by a board com- posed of an equal number of employers and workmen, and thus the lockout in the building trade in neaman is terminated. +s202- ‘The first speech | by Mr. John Bright since his retirement from public life was delivered a short time ago in response to a handsome testimonial presented by his Staffordshire admirers. The address consisted of a brief review of the last thirty years in England, noticing the reform bills of 1832 and 1867, and speaking of both with warm praise. The parsage of the ballot bill by the House of Lords, which body seems to Mr. Bright “the last refuge of political ignorance and passion,” is alluded to asa great step for- ward. ——_____- ee —____ All the European powers have accepted the invitation of the French government to send representatives to a congress, to be held in Paris, for the purpose of taking into considera- tion the metrical syetem. be Meeting of the DEMO )BATIC and aren os DISTBICT.—There wilt adjourned CUNSERVATIVE VOL ERs of this District held pid ene?
