GreeLtky.—The Binghampton Republican some time since made an ugly charge against Horac > Greeley to the effect that in October, 1871, he began intriguing with various democratic poli- tictans (the most notable of whom was the Hon. Horatio Seymour) for the democratic nomiia- tion for the Presidency. One charge was that Horace Greeley agreed in October, 1871, on his own behalf, to be a candidate tor President if Horatio Seymour and the democratic leaders would support him, and that he held a correspon- dence on that subject; that Mr. Greeley formal- ly recognized his agreement, and communicated the fact of the democratic proposition to Reuben FE. The K ANOTHER 8WA Cavses of Sv -—There is nothing more ¢ ficult for a sane man to understand than why people will commit suicide. The problem is ron dered still more perplexing by the fact that many saicides grow out of causes which are considered the mest trivial. Only a little while ago there was the girl who plunged into a watery grave ung because she had warts, and the man wno himeelf because his wife had ber hair cut of spite of his opposition; and now within a few days a West Virginia man goes out into his barn and becomes his own hangman because his din- ner isn’t ready promptly. As in these cases the victims must have been infinitesimally endowed With .brains and with all so senscleasly sensi- tive that their lives would not only be a burden to themselves, but to everybody about them, it is es well, perhaps, to count. their taking’ of themselves off the only “happy thought” of their lives, and for their benctit to make the dis- tinction of justifiable suicidi as < of Tom Lowery.
