Both ships were to be sent back to New York at the earliest possible moment. ‘The Ticonderogo sailed on the 22d of June on a cruise to the northern ports of Brazil, and the Wasp was at Colonia on the Iith of Jane. The health of the officers and men of the fleet is good. Tae Marquis Dz Noaltyes, the new French Minister, now en route to Washington, and taking New York in by way of the Brevoort House, is described by a newspaper man as “tall and spare in form. He wears a full beardof a reddish hue; his hair, it is unnecessary to say, is of alike color. His tace denotes good nat and has the sleepy and studious look of a savant. His dress is as simple and unpretentions as his manner.” Minute, but hardly complimentary. The Marquis is the second son of the Duke of that name, and was born in 1530 at the Chateau de Maintenon. His great granduncle—a Mar- quis de Noailles—was a brother-in-law of La- fayette, and took part with him iu the Ameri- can war of independence. The new French Minister is also a descendant from the celebrated Mme. de Maintenon. He has written a histori- cal work in three volumes, entitled ‘Henri III et la Prologne en 1592,” besides many pamphlets and literary contributions to magazines and rewspapers. ARRIVAL OF SPotzED Tatt AnD His Dgte- GaTion.—Spotted Tail, chief of the Brule- Sioux, accompanied by D. R. Risley, agent for that tribe, Messrs. Jules Ecoffe, Chas. E. Guern and Todd Rancall, who are counected with the White River agency; Iron- Shell, Swift Bear and Two Strike, subordinate chiefs, and sixteen of the prominent young’ men of the Brule-Sioux nation, arrived in town this morning, and took up their quarters at the Washington House. The main body of the Indians occupy @ large room at the hotel, and this afternoon were lying ou the cots in their usual airy costume, engaged in tanning themselves or smoking ' Spotted ‘Tail and his tavorite wife, a comely-looking In- dian woman about twenty-five years of age, have a room to themselves. and the chiefs Iron Shell, Swift Bear, and Two Strike pecan, a bed-room on the same floor. When the reporter of Tax Stan visited Spotted Tail this afternoon he found him lying on the bed wrap- ped in a red blanket. He at once rose, and ex. tending his hand with asmile said, ‘* How !” aiter the usual Indian fashion. He is a fine looking fellow, considerably younger than Red Cloud, and not near so dark in complexion. Mrs. Spotted Tail was squatting on the floor, Turkish fashion, engaged with a needle and thread repairing the rents in her Dolly Vargen. The object of Spotted Tail’s visit isto settf@ questions in reference tothe location of his agency. Why the money-getting, in one way and another; but they have nevertheless found time to do a good deal toward developing and patronizing water- ing places, mineral springs and other places of fashionable resort. And in California, asin the eastern states, it is considered the st: h and necessary thing to leave the city during the summer season. It must, however, be under- etood by the reader that the rules which govern in relation to summer resorts on the Atlanti side are all reversed on the su pace is called Thorpe’s I do not know, unless it is because it is kept by a worthy and attentive German couple named Mangenberg. Mr. M ot the firm, attends to the bibulous and the Madam to the solid wants of the inner man, and between them they seem te have very sac cessfully solved the great American problema of knowing how to keep a hotel. The specia of Thorpe’s are flowers and Hamburg steak Other tempting dishes and compounds are however, not lacking. The place was, I b lieve, formerly the country residence of @ wealthy gentleman who had beth the means and sheltered locality necessary for the gratiti- cation of a taste for and the display in this respect 1s at once astonishing and at- tractive to the last extreme. I have not space for a catalogue of the rare and beautiful plants which tlourish here in rich profusion and almost endless variety. I may, however, be pardoned tor mentioning lemon verbena trees ten feet high, a hedge row nearly six feet high of choice geraniums in full bloom, rose trees nearly as large as one’s ankle, fuschia and he- Kotrope bushes with trunks hardly less in size, and Cloth of Gold and Le Mare roses nearly as big as coflee saucers. These are among the beautiful floral attractions which challenge the admiration and almost surpass the imagination of the visitor. As for the Hamburg steak, that is a long way beyond my powers of description. But its tempting incense still gratifies the sense of smell. and the memories of its juicy t- ness and delicious flavor will jong ‘live to tickle the palate and awaken pleasant associations. How it is prepared 1 know uot, nor whether the secret of its compounding is’ to die with its present possessor. I can only say, happy far, at least, as San Francisco and surroundings are concerned. the east fashionables and invalids go to the mountains, the sea side, or the medicinal springs, as the case may be, to find a cooler temperature in c nection with saline breezes or healing wate: Here, they leave the city during July and Augus to escape the cold: to find, as they will tell you, a little sunshine to bask in, rather than because they need sea air or medicated beverages. For it is always to be remembered that no true Cali- fornian will for a moment, no, not even infer- entialby, admit that the state in general or any particular part of it is not the chosen and peca- liar abode of the Genius of Health. The anathe- mas of the Society of Pioneers and the jeers and hisses of infuriated editors would be upon him it he did, and after that he would never be able to hold up his head in decent society again. Still, an occasional ray of warm sunshine and a brief escape from raw gales is a pleasant thing of itself; and, besides, perspiration may possibly help the action of the liver and thus serve to oft the germs of disease contracted elsewhere. Any way, the people of San Francisco get off to these places as otten as they conveniently can, In \ler- and stay as long as possible. Anxious to escape the noise andeon, fusion of independence day, a party of four of us concluded to try our luck there With the rod and line on that occasion, but our success was only moderate. One cannot, however, expect to do much at trout-fishing where they have and £0 the country follows suit, as it is very to do everywhere, without much regard for the unities of the situation. Curiously enough, too, there Is a real or fan- cied resemblance between the leading places of resort in California and those in the eastern states. Thus, Santa Cruz is considered the Newport of the Paciti listoga is regarded as corresponding to Saratoga; indeed I am not sure but its name is designed in some way to signify the Saratoga of California, as it cer- tainly would were the superfluous letter s drop- ped from the middie. Donner and Tahoe lakes are more than a match for Lake George, save in the important requisite of hotel accom- modations. [And I will be excused for injecting just here the remark that while the hotels or San Francisco are excellent, those of the coun- try are as a rule simply execrable.) Then, too. the White Sulphur Springs of the Napa valley are backed against those of Virginia. The Geyser combination is reckoned equat to the attractions of half a dozen single places of resort in the states, the Hot Springs of Arkansas thrown in, while for nearly all the minor rma) on that side there are corresponding localities here. ‘To be sure, there is nothing on the Pacific coast answering to the Falis of Niagara or a trip up Lake Superior; but on the other hand there is nothing lke the Yosemite Valley anywhere els. inthe world. Andif she has no Natural pe she has the Biggest Trees yet discovered on the face of the earth. So, on the whole, the account seems to be pretty evenly balanced. At ar; rate, California has nothing to fear from a com parison of her wonderful and attractive featurc with those of any other section of equal extent in these respects she ‘s certainly far more than a match for any angie state in the Union, whe- ther variety or quality of attractions be taken into account. Of all this you can easily be convinced, even if you have not the time and means requisite t¢ make a general tour through the state,—that is if you are content with hearssy evidence. For the average Cullfornian is not much given to hiding the lights of his state under a bushel. Iu fact he (and she as well) is apt to err a little or the other side. But this is not strange. He ha: spent many years on this coast, without th facilities of clicap or speedy communication with the rest of the world. He has seen astonishing developments in growth and progress in th: twenty-odd short years since he came here, with little or no opportunity for comparing them wit! those of other quarters. Hoe therefore naturally contrasts his old home as he left it with his new home as it is now, and he is very apt to fall int the error of assuming that all'the advance has been made on this side. It is consequently strange that he should have grown somewhat provincial in tone, and & trifle boastful in b manper. Still, justice requires that it should be said of the true Californian that these extrava- gant ideas of supremacy are in the main toler- ably well sustained by a liberal and enterprising spirit in business affairs, and an open-hande: and untiring hospitality in private life. This, | thinX, must be the testimony of all or nearly ali visitors to California. — Although not pete coming within the cat egory of places of resort, properly speaking, yet a letter on that subject would not be complete without some mention of THE CLIFF HOUSE. This noted local attraction is, as almost al) readers know, situated about five miles ¢ west of the city, on @ high sheer rock, whic overhangs and overlooks the broad and restless waters of the Pacific ocean. Its most interest ing feature to strangers is the far-famed sea! rocks, which lie a couple of hundred yards from the verandah, and upon which scores of im- mense seals or rather sea lions may be scen porting themselves at almest all hours of the day. One is puzzled to know whether the nn- gainly motions and hoarse angry barkings of these hybrid creatures are more interesting or repulsive; but in some way considerable time is spent in watching them and discussing their characteristics. From the porch of the house the Farallone islands and light-house, situated about thirty miles westward, may be seen in very clear weather. This is extremely rare, in acres of seuid fog frem morning until night Yet, in spite of these great drawbacks, oer basket was graced by the presence of seventeen speckled beauties, varying from six to fourteen inches in length, which proved to be as satis- fying to the appetite as they mere attractive to the eye. Andas a matter of course, the sensa~ tion of pulling them out is a still more pleasant experience than either seeing or tasting them. The road leading to these lakes is an exceeding- ly hilly one, but it is well graded and kept re- markably smooth, considering the ragged sur- face of the country through which it runs. It is, withal, one of the most beautiful and pice turesque carriage ways to be seen any where. Indeed, a ride over it is of itself well worth the taking, even without the crowning attraction of trout-fishing at the end. But I have lingered so long in the pleasant by-ways leading to it, that I must close this let. ter before reaching its real subject. On this something anon, provided the spiri: i willing and flesh holds out. ages 2 <0. Political Notes. The democrats of Missouri hold a state con- vention at Jeficrson City, August Zist, to nomi- nate a state ticket. Mr. George F. Hoar, of the Worcester (Mass. district, has withdrawn his determination wot to be re-elected to Congress, The Georgia democrats do not mix readily with the Greeley republicans, and talk of sepa- rate tickets and a fight on the straight demo- cratic platform. The New Yorker (democrat) and the Ahond Zeitung, of New York, have come out tor Grant and Wilson. They bave hitherto been liberal republicans, but anti-Greeley. enator Sumner will, it is said, shortly reply to the Se hn, recently written to him by Frederick Douglass, appealing to him to stand by the republican party, and not to do anything that will aid in the election of Horace Greeley. The following are the latest nominations tor Congressmen :—A.R. Cotton, republican, of the 2d district of Iowa, for re-election; Major H. B. Strait, republican, 24 Minnesota; E. A. Stan ford, democrat, 5th Kentucky; H. 8S. Bun: republican, 11th Ohio. f we are to believe the organs, and of course we must, we shall have two Presidents, two Congressmen from nearly all the districts, and two Governors in nearly all the states, as the result of this canvass. At any rate, both parties are ++ sure” of carrying Most of the states by from ten to one hundred thousand majority. It is reported that Hon. John A. Peters will not consent to be a candidate for re-election to Congress from the Bangor (Maine) district, which be bas represented for the last three terms, owing to the pressure of private busi- ness. He will, however, give his support to the republican ticket, and take the stump for Grant and Wilson. Ata democratic meeting in Indianapotis on Saturday evening, Hon. T. A. Hendricks made a speech, in which he not only eats crow, but seems to givei t the preference over canvass back duck. He closed his speech with the following conundrum :. ‘ow that the amerd- ments have been declared adopted, is it humili ation on my part to cease that controvers turn my back upon it, and to declare that amendments must be respected and obeyed ? —_~-<ee- —____ Epitu O’GonMAN gn THE Potice Covet.— A dispatch to the Associated Press from San Fr cisco, July 10h, says:—The case of Edith O'Gorman, “the escaped nun,” and her has- band, Protesscr Aufirey, and the private detec- tive cfticers Thomas Ausbro, and Smuth, alias Allis, which has created much feeling’ here late na terminated in the police court to-day.
