The inclemency of the weather of Saturday evening did not teem in the least to dampen the spirits of the crowds which thronged our streets. Eve- ry body was good natured, and no one appeared disposed to complain either of the rain or of the pushing and crowding which are inseparable from such occasions. At an early hour the mar- kets were almost entirely depletedor good things. ‘The wares of the hucksters and butchers went off in a twinkling, since nobody thought of hag- gling about prices, considering the near ap- proach of the joyous occasion of Christmas. Overhead yesterday the day was everything that be desired. “The sun shone most or the t-me quite warm and bright, but in the streets the snow melted rapidly, making the crossings very mudéy, and rendering pedestrianism some- what unpleasant. Notwithstanding, Pennsylva- nia avenue and the main streets of the city were thronged at an early hour with a multitude of people ef both sexes in holiday attire, and churches where services were held were crowded with worshippers. The chimes of Dr. Newman's church rifg out cheerily on the morning and everybody seemed in the very best of Many of the stores remained closed duri day, but some were opened until neon, fur the Pre; | accommodation of the public. ‘The street cars on comfortably crow: ngers complaine: the Avenue line were un- all day as usual. If pas- f being hustled ‘about by ken men or having Christmas turkeys ant on rubbed against their clothes, they re- ceived the usual cheering response of “Well, if you don’t like it, why didn’t you walk?” Is hot about timesomebody was reaping the gol: harvest which awaits the company which will give the public proper facilities for getting to points between the Capitol and Georgetown without being subjected to all the incunveni- ences of a ride on the present line of street cars. The matinee and evening performance at the National Theater were well attended yesterday, and at night there were numerous social enter, taipmenis. CHRISTMAS IN THE CHURCHES. ‘The Christmas services in the various churches came off on Sunday and Christmas day, accord ing to the programme published in Tix St. ot Saturday. Besides the observances there oted, there were special services in other churches, among them the following: he exercises at the McKendree Sunday scheol, at its regular session last Sabbath morn- ing, were novel but approprtate, and worthy of | imitation. After the instructive service, pre- ared in connection with the Berean series of lessons, instead Of distributing presents to the children, as is usual in Sabbath schools at this season, the experiment of a Christmas offering trem the children to the poor was successfull undertaken. Despite the icy pavements, whic! kept many from attending, the handsome sum of £60 was given for this laudable purpose. The unusually Tnteresting infant class connected with the charge, not only contributed most free- ly for the needy, but at intervals in the pro- ¢ramme delighted all with joyous and soul-in- spiring song. The school room was tastefully decorated with evergreen, and on the blackboard Was inscribed: “Happy Christmas to the Needy,” which was heartily repeated in concert children at the conclusion of the dona- e teachers at Ryland Chapel had a Sunday school festival, for the children’s benefit, last evening.
