, a * —GeGuQGeee EVENING STAR. _ CROSBY 8. NOYES.......Editor. Largest Cireulation inthe Distriet Reading Matter on Every Page, WASHINGTON CITY: IUESDAY...........December 26, 1871. Christmas was very gencrally and as a rule very appropriately observed yesierday, though, we regret to say, an unusual amount of c:unkenness was visible on the streets, and there was little or no falling off in the foolish and ovs Use Of fire crackers and pistols. The prastice of giving presents seems to be growing every year, both in extent of obsetvance and ex- travagance in the cost of gifts. This latter feature is to be regretted, since it places many persons in the predicament of taxing themselves beyond their means if they undertake to remem- ber ail who feel that they ought to be thus re- membered, or of being considered miserly or selfish if they do not doso. Besides, the fashion of giving costly presents often leads their recip- ients to esteem them according to their intrinsic valuc, and sometimes to indulge in comparisons which are as unjust as they are improper,—for- that liberality is not at all a matter of antity, but purely ene of proportion. Far better the good old times, when giits were few and simple, when they were valued for the giver, and not because they were handsomer than somebody else's, or represented so much in doliars and cents on the invoice books of the dealer. ss0e- es ‘The Baltimore Sun says it seeks “to be loyal | ™ only to truth and decency.” Allright; but it must exercise dae diligenee in seeking the truth. itdoes not seem to have found out that the wat is over.— Wash. Star. ® That's exactly what's the matter. The radical war is not over—vide the enforcement act legis- lation, the een of the army through several | states of the South, the monstrous pillage of its people by federal carpet-baggers for all the years | | sinee the rebellion, and the tact that*‘traly loil” | ~eusibilities were never disturbed about fraudsat until Tammany very recently developed its ilar wholesale stealings. Thats | the eae | j tor you, Mr. Star_—Balt, Sun A stern chase is along one, and we are afraid | the Sun's pursuit of trath is of this description, | else why does it ignore the ku-klux outrages as the cause of the “raidings” of the U.S. troops ? | ‘The South, no doubt, has hadoceasion to appre- | ciate the fact that the way of the transgressor is bard. It is hard for states that have here- | Due from other banks and bankers. house........ tofore stood second to none in statesmanship, influence, and financial soundness to be rae, represented, and bankrupted by “‘carpet-bag- gets” and “scalawags;” but a short season of manly fortitude by the sufferers, under @ penalty much lighter than the vanquished in war asnally endure, would have brought them all right, with the blood-suckers and adventurers replaced by men of their own choice, of ability and integrity. Gut they must needs indulge in the insanity of ku-kluxism, and a precious mess they have made | of it! The Sun has the contidenceof the southern people, and we call npon that paper—se soon as its laborious pursuit shall have been successful to represent to them the utter idiocy of ka-klux- sm, and the discouragement it gives their well- wishers. —-ee--—__ The membersot the Society forthe Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (why net prevent cruelty to bumans also, and adopt a shorter name > might have donea good work by arresting nearly every conduetor or driver on the 7th street rail- way line on Sunday evening. There was hardly a car that was pot crimina!ly overloaded on the up trips. and one that we know of carried no less than eyhty passengers up the heavy grade from K to K street, and with only two horses! In New York long experience, close observa- tion, and careful ealeulations have taught the | horse railway companies that every passenger over forty taken on one car, even with their com- Paratively light grades, is carried at an absolute loss, as beyond that number the exhaustion to EvEsiNG, Gr Bec: sl, commencing’ at ¥ oclork, horses and the extra wear and tear of cars greatly exceeds the value of the fares received: PIC! « One would think thereiore that, throwing the | ((@ 0!"1° smail matter of decently accommodating the public out of the question altogether, self-inter- est would prompt the greedy managers of this | line to bave some consideration for the dumb brutes out of whose sinews they coin somach | money; but it seems that nothing less than the strong arm of the law can bring them to a sense | Of duty. Let this be invoked, then, on every proper eceasion. +s0e- On reflection, hi Works better reconsider its action, undo what has been done toward changing the grade of Ith street, between I amd L. and restore it to-its ol condition in that respect? All told, the job cannot invelve directly and consequentially an expenditure of much if any less than thirty thousand doUars, and after it shall be completed | we cannot see how anybody or any thing, except the contractor, is to be benefitted in any way or | degree by the change. At the very best, as it seems to us, it isa serious and costly titania if it be the fault of the late engineer, it should | 1 be corrected at once; if it be the fault of the Board itself, there is even greater need for an \ advance backward. | = ee = ‘The pressure for appointment to positions in | the government service before the first of Jan- uary has been much greater, it is said, since the | 11° dent of the rules prepared | — adoption by the Pr by the civil service commission, than at any time within the memory of men now living. Not that the numerous applicants will not be te to stand the tests imposed by those rules; oh, no! but it would be such a nice thing, you | know, to commence the new year with gn ap- | pointment safely in one’s pocket. Besides, it would gratify “their Member,” and generally “their Senator,” also, to know that they had been successful without his being obliged to come down Personally to see about it | Im view of the tipsiness vesterday it is to be hoped that the ladies will not set out spirituous | liquors in supplying refreshments to their call- erson New Year's day. Last year there was an etfort in this direction te discourage the use of wine, punch, &e., at refreshment tables, by the substitution of chocolate and coffee, and the results were very satisfactory. The ladies were saved so much anveyance from mandlin, hic- cuping visitors that they will doubtless be very willing to make the reform general. | moses -wee- = ‘The Republican, in referring to the edlitorial | in Tux Star denouncing the swindling lottery | | concern Opposite us, says :—*‘Better late than never.
