PSS —h ’ EVENING STAR. | =suseaasoccmaeaae a eS E CROSBY 8. NOYES... Largest Circulation in the Distriet VENID Reading Matter on Every Page. 43: 5 WV ASHIN GTON ON CITY: 27, 1871. Some have a mistaken impression as to the order of succession to the throne of Great | Brita Should Victoria die or abdicate, the succession would fall to the Duke of Cornwall, son of Prince Albert, wow eight years old, but © the Queen ceased to reign during his minority, a regency would be established, and the Duke of Cambridge, the Queen’s cousin, and present commander-in-chief of the army, would doubtless be made Regent. He would be acceptable to the Tories and not unacceptable to the Liberals, from the fact that he has ex- hibited some sympathy with moderate liberal- ism; but in the present disturbed feeling among the masses in regard to royal rule, it is probable that the Queen will hesitate to carry out the purpose she is said to have entertained of ab- dicating, and as she is but fifty-two yearsof age, and is of a long-lived family, she bids fair te continue to reign during the minority of her grandson. So great is the prejudice against Prince Al- bert, in consequence of his vices, his shallow tmund, and his utter lack of appreciation of the dignity of his position, that his death would an- doubtedly strengthen the British throne. His unpopularity has been the great motive power of the English radicals in agitating in behalf of republican rule, and by his death they would lose their main argument. To be sure, his son may prove quite as vicious and brainless as him- self, but the chances are that he may develop better; and there is undoubtedly a strong ven- cration for royalty amongst the upper and mid. ule classes that will exhibit itself on emergency. ‘The advocacy of republicanism is in the wrong sort of bands to commend it to a religious, law- abiding people like the English; and the great 1 roperty interests of the Kingdom will always suake a formidable stand in behalf of royalty and “settled eoverament.” ss]. Estimates as to the number of spiritualists in this country differ widely. Some few enthusi- | ii aptic table tippers foolishly claim that there are thirteen millions; Judge Edmonds says between five and six millions; Hepworth Dixon, three millions; and Andrew Jackson Davis moderately estimates the number at 1,230,000; while non- believers think those figures would be about right if be left off the 1, in other words that the number does not exceed 230,000. The census tables do not give us the information, and it does not appear that the spirits themselves have been consulted. They might be spared fro some of the so-called manifestations to throw 2 im case of the death of the Prince of | | | light on this subject, on which they ought | to be well posted. A census taken by them | would doubtless be as trustworthy as some of the estimates given above. Mr. Tebb, an in- | teiligent, pains-taking, English spiritualist, who | bas reeently traveled over a large part of the | United States, was unable to get any satisfaec- tory information; but, after a wide and serious | investigation, believes that there are im the Eastern States three per cent. of spiritualist; Middle and Western, two per cent.; Southern | States and the Territories, a portion of one per | cent., making a spiritualist population, includ- | ing the children of believers, of 660,000. This | estinfate is probably too high, as there are many who sttend the seances and take a scientific interest in the investigation of the phenomena presented without having a well-grounded belief that they are produced by any supernatural agency. A very large number of people believe there is some natural force, but little anderstood | as yet, which will account for the few well authenticated cases of the moving or changing of matter without the interposition of a direct Visible motor. ee Where water is plentiful (as we trust it soon will be in Washington) and the ground is sloping, the ordinary plan of sewerage answersevery pur- | pose. where water is scarce, ora city is | built on a dat surface, the drainage problem is a very embarrassing one. A new method known as the “ pneumatic sewerage system” is now attracting considerable attention, air being the motive power instead of water. The plan is to €ivide a city intocomplexes and sub-complexes, & sub-complex comprising all the sub-complexes within a radius of 2,500 feet. Each complex has a large air-tight cast-iron reservoir; and each sub-complex a smaller one connecting with the main reservoirand with the houses, by means of pipes provided with valves and cocks, by which a circulation of air may be prevented. The air inside is exhausted by means of a large air-pump driven in connection with the main reservoir by a powerful steam-engine, and then the outer | air, pressing upon the contents of the pipes, forces them into the reservoir. By this means the pipes may all be cleared in less than five minutes, their contents first passing into the | sub-reservoirs and then into the main one. This system has been in suceessful eperation in Prague, Bohemia, for two and a half years, and is being introduced into other European cities. enn Occasional rumors come up from Ohio of com- Dinations—some already made, and others in progress,—to defeat the re-election of Mr. Sher- map to the United States Senate at the next meeting of the gevera!l assembly of that state. A close investigation will show that in most of these cases “the wish is father to the thought.” So far as we can judge, both from our knowledge of the wish and temper of the people of Ohio, | and from the representations that reach us, there exists no general disposition to exchange | an experienced and faithful officer for one who is entirely untried in the duties he will be called upon to periorm,—and this without disparage- | ment of the ability or party claims of any of the gentlemen whose names have been mentioned in connection with the position. The substan- i } } | | f tial reasons and real indications in the premises | all justify the opinion that Mr. Sherman will be | Leth nominated and elected on the first ballot. 22 —____ If it shall be proven true, as reported, that young Loring and his companions were massa- exed by the Apaches belonging to one of the Arizona reservations, it is about time to aban- don Mr. Colyer’s sugar-water policy, and leave the matter of managing our fiendish wards wholly in the hands of Gen. Crook. No matter how conciliatory the course of government to- ward them may be, it seems impossible for them to keep faith and refrain from spilling innocent snd unoffending blood. As their own acts have foreed the issue whether they or the white race shall be exterminated, their friends and apelo- gists cannot complain if they are wiped off the face of the earth. No foot of American soil must be left unsafe for a peaceful traveler, no matter what the cost. ——_-+ee-_____ At the meeting of the Boston Common Coun- cil last Tharsday evening, an order was passed for the establishment of a steam fire-boat to protect the water front and shipping from fire. Chicago is taking similar action, and the papers in that city assert that, with an efficient fire- boat, the frequent res among the lumber yards there, beretofore so destructive, can in most cases be extinguished with but little loss, Itis intended that these fire-boats shall be capable of threwing much larger quantities of water on a fire than the ordinary steam fire-engines. — It is stated im the Journal de if meen ater Coz, of Paris, that petroleum can be converted into a permanent solid, which will burn without liquifying, and may be preserved in « firm mass for any period of time.
