Mr. Sherman Jobnson testified that in March, 1869, he was a clerk in the Secretary of ths Treasury's office; had charge of the records of recommendations of appointments and removals of clerks, &c.; was requested by Mr. Clarke to make a search for this paper; did so in the files room, but could not find it; never saw the letter. Mr. Wm. O. Avery testified that the search he made was a thorough one, but was unable to find any trace of the document. Mr. Henry C.
