_EVENING STAR. CROSBY 8. NOYES.......Editor. Largest Circulation in the Distriet Beading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: English manufacturers get rich because of their ability to compete with all the rest of the world. Why they can do so successfully, and why their employes remain poor, is shown by Fecent deveropments during oficial investiga- tiors. Not on'y are wages ridiculously low, but the workmen ave robbed by what is called the “ guck” system, and what is known here as the order” sysier—payment im groceries, &c., irstead of cash. A rccent letier from England Statcs that in She.Jand the fishermen work under this system and are always in debt to their employers. They never sce money; if by any accident a man gets a pound or two he hides it, for fear its possession may damage him with the masters. Such a system paralyzes effort, and is making paupers of the whole population. And this system is spread more or less over the country, making the poor the slaves of the class next above them. They are always in debt, and always dependent upon their creditors. They must pay whatever price is asked, and so are robbed in both wazes and prices, in quality and quantity. Is it any wonder that strikes aro resorted to, and that the general dissatisfaction takcs a political shape, and makes the oppressed workmen agitate for a change of government ? Half the laboring men of the country, it is esti- mated, are now on sirike, and if they adopt the advice of Prof. Beesley, and combine all trades im one great trades’ union, and all strike at once, for the shortest time and the highest wages, the result would be one of the greatest upbeavals to which England has ever been sub- jected, and the effects would be felt throughout the eiy ilized worid. ——_—___-<e2-_____ The Protestant clergymen of Wheeling have United in the publication of an address to the public advocating an abolition of the prevailing custom of costly and often vulgar displays at funerals. They argue that extravagant expendi- ture for carriage hire are unnecessary burdens on many who are pecuniarily unable to mect them, and say that “except where peculiar cir- Cumstances require more, all that respect for the dead and sympathy for the bereaved demand of any besides the immediate relatives and close friends, is that they should meet at the house or the church where the religious serviccs are con- Gucted before the body is taken to the grave. If this was once commonly understood, there would be no need for long trains of Again, the presence of a mixed multitude at the grave, where the last leave is to be taken of the dead, seems hardly to be in harmony with this peculiarly tender and solemn scene.” Substantially the same reform was undertaken by the Catholic clergy in various parts of the country some time ago, but their eforts seem to be without truits now, so far as the evidences | Presented to a casual observer are worth any- ‘thing. It is time to set such a movementon foot again by presences preconcerted action in all the churches. ‘The undergraduates of Amherst College have foolishly ranged themselves with the other an- gallant opponents of the admission of women to collegiate institutions. These susceptible youths give as one of the reasons for their opposition that “the (air ones would entice men from study. Considerate youngsters, be not dismayed. You arg perfectly safe. No young lady with brains enough to fit her for a collegiate course would be likely to waste her ammunition on such small game as the prurient rowdiee who have hitherto disgraced themselves by an unmanly war against those women who carnesily desire to fit them- Selves for careers of usefulness. ——_—_e--_____ Baltimore elcct- a mayor and both branches of the ey councils tx-morrow.
