Two other cxecu- tions took place in the State yesterday. : At Camberiand, Jolin Howard, alias John Lewis, lias Shorty Evans, was executed for the murder of Heury Miuer, near Oldtown, Maryland, on the 18th of August last. Biller wes e: tn boating on the Chesapeake and Obio canal, and Howard ‘Was employed on the boat. The murder occurred about 4 o'clock in the morning. Miller used yome avgry words to Howard aboat the manner inv which be was dotng his work. Howard caught up a “‘spreader-stick” and struck Miller some three or four violent blows over the head, trom the efects of which hedied in a few hou: Howard was arrested, tried, convicted and sen- tenced to death. At Frederick, Yesterday, the sentence of the colored man, john Martin, was executed in the jail yard, for the atrocious crime of rape. He committed the heinous offence g] the person of garet Butcher, a white woman, years of age, and for many years quite infirm, on the 6th day of Apri, 1570, between daylight and suprise, about six miles from Frederick, near the village of Mount Pleasant. Mr. Ham- mer read from the ecafold, at the request of the prisoner, bis farewell! address, which, he assured ble spir | advisers, was his dying words, and that what is contained therein is true, and that he did not want to be asked any more questions. This fement is in conflict with the confession mer made to Kev. Mr. Hummer © confessed to Rev. Mr. and Mr. Backus about two woeks ago: y triemds: I stand before you, condemned by the law of the land for a crime my life. I confess 1 suffer just! I feel that the Court and jury have done right.
