EVENING STAR. | CResBY S NOYES. Editor Largest Circulation in the District‘ Reading Matter on Every Page. |: WASHINGTON OITY: SAITTE Y...+000..Febraary U1, 1S71. The Status of Washingtes. A study of the census tables of the larger cities of the cou developes some interesting and suggestive facts touching the growth ani! prosperity of Washing: ton City as compared with that of the other | holding a corresponding position in re- | 0 size and importance. instance, while she stood fifteenth in rank @, she was able to take only one step for- | or im other words to become fourteenth im | im 186. This apparently slight advance was owing partly, it may be assumed, to the depressing inflaences of slavery, which then surrounded her. but it was dae im a much ater degree to the extraordinary growth of some of the western cities which naturally foi- lowed the rapid development of that section of the country between the years i550 and 110; but she nevertheless passed Pittsburg, Charles- ton and Providence in the race, being passed im turn by Newark and Chicago. Yet, notwith- Standing the still more astonishing growth of some of the western cities during the decade just ended, and in spite of the extraordinary impetus given to all placey interested in manu tactures by the exceptional demands growing out of the late war, we tind Washington still \cep'pg pace with the most prosperous cities of the country, and advancing from the fourteenth to the twelfth in point of population between the years 1860 and 150. In this decade she passed Newark, Louisville and Albany, and was passed in turn by San Francisco alone, — being thus able to keep in advance of all her old | competitors, and compelled to yield the palm | of progress only to the metropolis of the Pacitic coast, the circumstances of whose growth it is | well understood were quite exceptional in their | character. But if we examine into the per centage of imerease of population in the fourteen cities new containing more ihan one hundred thou sand souls, the progress of Washington will be igund to be illustrated in a still more striking manner. We have not at band the requisite ‘a for making a comparison on this point earlier than for the ten years ending with 1560, | and it is doubtful whether, in view of ail the €\ements properly entering into a consideration of the subject, the statistics for an earlier petied would be of any real value in this con- nection. But it will be seen that in 1560 Wash- ington stood number seven in respect to the per centage of growth, showing an increase during try for the last three decades | the decade then ending of 52.75 per ceut. Of the fourteen cities which were abead of Wash- ington in point of pepulation at that time, six | ted her im the quality of per centage of increase, as follows, in the order named: Brooklyn, #t Louis, Butalo, Phiiadelphia, Louisville aud | New York. Gut in 1870 her rank among the fourteen cities then containing over one bun- cred thousand inhabitants, in respect to per centage of increase, was number fuur, being led in this trying test of growth only by the cities of Chieago, San Francisco and St. Louis, order named. The per centage of increase iti Washington during the last ten years was 75 30, je that of the three cities leading her was respectively, 173.70, 165.20, and 93.40. From these exhibits it will be seen that the | ( ratio of imerease of popalation in Washington | bas Deon greater than that of any of the larger i e3 on the Atiantic slope H We are asset without the means of instituting comparison of her increase in wealth and | ! business with that of the other cities referred to in this connection, but we do not doubt that when the statistics illustrating these points are | made public, her adrance in these respects will be found to be even more rapid and striking thanher marked increase in population, nor that her progress in education, culture, litera ture, the arts and sciences, and general im prove will be apparent in astill greater | degree. As stated above, these facts are both interest- | ar pg and suggestive, and, it may be added, aot less gratifying and encouraging. They demon- strate beyond the possibility of cavil or doubt that the material and intellectual growth of Washington have been more rapid and sub stantial than those of any of her sister cities, and give a promise of the future which justitis the liveliest and most sanguine auticipations as to her ultimate destiny. That these anticipa- | tions will be realized, those best acquainted with the grounds upon which they are based en- te rtal ———_+se+ ‘Tax Cagsrvat.—The carnival ts now an as- sured fact, and the rivalry is now amongst those charged with the management of the dif ferent features of the gala asto which sha’ carry Off the palm for attractiveness.
