Peter Parker, in the chair, and Simon Wolf. Esq., secretary. The secretary submitted his annual report, showing that the seciety commenced active operations for the winter of 1670 on Dec. 2, 186%, and closed them on the 7th day of April, 10. Smith, @ soldier, married in this city @ girl calling herself Nettie Brown, on the 6th or January, (S864; that Smith returned with nis Tegiment to New York, and the girl, who.e maiden pame was Sheldon, after going to New York to see him, retarned here, appearing as a widow, that one Charles P. Wannall, Jr., be- came acquainted with her, wi with her to Baltimore, and was married to her by Rev. Thomas Barrow, ot that city, on the Sist of August, 1566, he giving his place of residence as Richmond, and she hers as Baltimore. In January, 1867, she filed @ bill fer a divorcefrom mith, which was granted, and in November ‘ollowing the decree was made. In August, ints, while she was absent trom the city, Wannall filed a bill for a divorce, in which he charged that he had been deceived, and although she had asserted that Smith was dead, there were reports that he was living, and she had fall knowledge of his being alive at the time she married him. She an- swered this bill denying his allegations, and Messrs. J. H. Bradley avd R. £. Morsell, ap peared as her counsel. Wanuall failed tw od- tain a decree of divoree, and left the city on a wild bunt for the identical Smith the first husband, and after a fruitless search of nearly two years, returned here worn out in October li when he accidentally enucountered the cal individual he was looking for—James 0. Norris and Norris, fied a new bill. On Wednes« (28th inst.) Mrs. Wannall’s answer to Wannall’s bill was sworn to by the respondent, and filled by Mr. J. H. Bravley, Jr. ‘MES. WANNALL'S ANSWER. She avers and charges that the plaintiff, after a brief sojourn in this District, where he filed this suit, returned to St. Louis, where he had been and is # permanent resident, to his employ- ment as night clerk in the Olive-street Hotel, and she is advised that he is not entitled to main- tain his suit for divorce upon his own showing, and because he keeps beyond the jurisdiction of the court to avoid and defeat its process. She avers and charges that she is the lawful wife of etiti ', and calls for the production of the certificate in his possession.
