A “PECULIAR ATENT CASB—The Reason Why Mr. Read Couldn't Get His Patent Extended The Acting Commissioner of Patents to-day rendered an adverse decision in the case of an application of John B. lead for extension ot a patent, which is coupled with a peculiar histo- ry. Read, it appears, in 1856 invented an ord- nance projectile of great effectiveness and accu- racy and killing properties generally, and on October 2sth of that year he procut patent for the same in this city. He worked diligently and successfully on his invention ull 1861, when, upon the breaking out of the war, he linked his fortune with the Contederates, and the first act by which ie signalized his devotion to their cause was to get his letters patent ocuntersigned aad otherwise arranged at Nar the Confederate Patent Office, so as to secure immunity {rom infringement within the limits of Jeft Davis’ main. His projectiles were used largely by the Con- ape and since the war he has retiled his letters-patent in this city, with sppiteation for an extension, while on their very face is the seal of the Contederate States aitesting the fact above mentioned. Negative replies to all ap- plications, without be! in the shape of aa official decision, were fgiven at various tim but now, as Kead =, a3 to the truth of a report circulated that he has been refused an extension on account of his services in the Con- federacy, the Acting Commissioner replies that “ that is just the reason exactly,” and closes the case by an adverse decision. ——_—__ +400 — 87 Victoria inbales pulverized tobacco. @?
